Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel Baby

A little friend I met in Breckenridge.

All this time I've been misidentifying this little cutie as a baby chipmunk. I recently learned that he's actually a golden-mantled ground squirrel. They are very commonly mistaken for chipmunks, so apparently I am not alone in my mistake. Chipmunks have stripes on their faces; this little guy does not.

The scene off of Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach.

Interesting that this one picture accounts for a huge percentage of the views of my photostream. I don't even think it's my best shot. But I guess everyone loves Laguna, and who can blame them! It's one of my favorite places.

Cholla Buds

Joshua Tree National Monument.

This cactus is called jumping cholla (pronounced choya). The "jumping" part comes from the fact that the needles come off at such the slightest contact that it seems that they actually jump from the cactus into one's skin. To make matters worse, the end of each needle is barbed backwards so it rips the skin when pulled out. To make matters even WORSE, I accidentally kicked one of these that was on the ground and ended up with three needles that went right through my shoe into my toe. Not fun.

Wave Hitting a Rock

It's fun to watch the waves smash into the various rocks scattered around the shore.

A couple of kayakers pass by in the background. La Jolla Cove is a great place for kayaking. At a few points along the coastline, the cliffs have big holes (tunnels) in them which you can kayak in and out of. The waves never seem to be very rough so you don't have to worry about getting clobbered when you're inside a tunnel.

I didn't do any kayaking this time. Just relaxed on the beach and took pictures.

Being an aquarium and marine life lover, I paid a visit to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute in La Jolla.
