He enlisted in the Fourth Florida Infantry, Company F on May 23, 1861, at Lake Butler. He was captured at Cedar Key in January 1862 and sent to the Union prison at Fort Delaware until his exchange in August 1862.  He underwent treatment for typhoid fever at Richmond, Virginia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. He later fought at the battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee and Bentonville, North Carolina. He surrendered with General Johnston's Army of Tennessee. He was paroled in April 1865 and returned to Providence.&lt;br /&gt;
