Title: Monument at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park: Bushnell, Florida

General note: Dade Battlefield Historic State Park was the site of the opening battle of the Second Seminole War on 28 December 1835. Angry over the American government's Indian removal policy, a group of 180 Seminole warriors attacked Major Francis Dade and 103 soldiers marching from Fort Brooke (Tampa) to Fort King (Ocala). Only three of the Americans survived. The event was for years known as Dade's Massacre. Starting in 1905, with Congressman Stephen Sparkman, attempts were made to preserve the site. Finally, on 29 September 1921, at the urging of US Senator Duncan Fletcher, the Florida State Legislature purchased the site as a historic memorial. The 80-acre property was later transferred to the Florida Park Service as a state park. In 1972, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Dade Battlefield Historic Memorial. It was also designated as a National Historic Landmark.

General note: This early movie begins with a series of shots of St. Augustine, including the Fountain of Youth and the oldest house. Next, people are shown catching turtles at Silver Springs. The film continues with brief scenes of: Marineland; Palm Beach; Bok Tower; water skiing at Cypress Gardens; aerial and street scenes in St. Petersburg; Miami; Tin Can camping; Bayfront Park; fishing; Biscayne Bay; horse racing in Hialeah; flamingos; wildlife scenes; Seminoles in the Everglades (aerial of a village and children); sailboat races; and water skiing at night. The color is faded and the film is a little jumpy. Produced by Castle Films.

Title: Journalist Lucy Morgan with video camera and phone

General note: Lucy W. Morgan was born in 1940, and began her career in 1965 as a general reporter for the Ocala Star-Banner. In 1968, she joined the St. Petersburg Times, where in 1986 she was appointed Chief of the paper's Capital Bureau in Tallahassee. A recipient of numerous awards, her career was highlighted by winning the 1985 Pulitzer Prize (along with fellow reporter Jack Reed) for investigative reporting. In 2005, at the end of the legislative session, the Florida Senate honored her by renaming their press gallery the Lucy Morgan Senate Press Gallery for her 20 years of reporting on the Legislature. On March 14, 2006 she was inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame.

This film shows the beach at Silver Springs, a group of high school girls performing synchronized swimming, and a busload of students from the University of Florida arriving to practice their water show. A film crew makes a Coca-Cola commercial showing a model drinking a Coke underwater. Then, a Jantzen bathing suit commercial is filmed. The film also shows a boat tour, the Prince of Peace Memorial, Bartlett's Deer Ranch, and the Carriage Cavalcade. Produced by Guided Tours; sponsored by Silver Springs.

General note: Camp Roosevelt, located in Ocala just off highway 301/441, was a resident camp first built for the Army Corps of Engineers crews of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. From 1936 to early 1938, the WPA and the University of Florida assumed ownership for providing adult education classes. Later in 1938, the National Youth Administration (NYA) used it as a girls' resident camp in conjunction with the Marion County Vocational School to educate and provide job skills to young women (boys were later included). During the 1940s, the NYA conducted defense work out of it, before it reverted back to the Army Corps of Engineers in 1943. By the late 20th century, the buildings were part of a residential neighborhood. Printed on sleeve: Vocational School, Secondary Flight Class.
