General note: The coaching switch involving Ray Graves (left) and Doug Dickey (right) caused controversy in Gainesville. University of Florida President Stephen C. O'Connell announced the appointment of UF alumnus Dickey as head football coach immediately after his University of Tennessee volunteers lost to Ray Graves' Florida Gators, 14-13, in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on December 27, 1969.

Title: Portrait of Kansas State Agricultural College student and Florida's future 46th Supreme Court Justice Harold "Tom" Sebring: Manhattan, Kansas

Date: ca. 1920s

General note: Born in Olathe, Kansas on March 9, 1898. Fought in WWI and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1919, having been awarded numerous military decorations by the United States and France. Sebring received a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1923. He was head coach of the University of Florida track, boxing and football teams while earning his law degree there. Sebring graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1928. He served as Florida Supreme Court Justice from 1943 until 1955. In 1946 Justice Sebring was appointed by U.S. President Harry S. Truman to the U.S. Military War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany following WWII. Sebring requested, and was granted, a leave of absence for a period of up to one year during which a number of Circuit Court Judges were called to the Supreme Court to sit in his place, render opinions and vote as a full member of the Court. On September 1, 1955, Sebring retired from the Florida Supreme Court and was named the dean of Stetson University College of Law. Harold L. "Tom" Sebring died on July 26, 1968.

Title: Lane Fenner catching a pass in the end zone during the University of Florida - Florida State University football game: Tallahassee, Florida

Date: October 8, 1966

General note: Lane Fenner catching what would have been the winning touchdown in the UF-FSU game, but the umpire called him out. The game ended in favor of UF 22-19. A local photographer distributed this image following the game to show that Fenner had indeed caught the pass in bounds. FSU rebounded the following season, beating the Gators 21-16 in Gainesville. Beginning in 1968, UF won nine straight games against the Seminoles before surrendering four consecutive contests to FSU, under Head Coach Bobby Bowden, between 1977 and 1980.

General note: Before the modern highway, side hotels were the tourist camps all over Florida, such as this "Tin Can Tourist Camp" in Gainesville. Gainesville had many tourist camps, and this one dates from the years immediately following World War I when traveling became popular and automobiles became more plentiful.
