Title: Historic home of Mary McLeod Bethune: Daytona Beach, Florida

Date: ca. 1980

General note: Mary McLeod Bethune, the daughter of former slaves, was born on July 10, 1875 in Mayesville, South Carolina. In 1904, she came to Daytona Beach, Florida, and started a school for African-American girls. The school expanded and merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville in 1923. In 1941, the Florida Board of Education approved a four-year baccalaureate at the school, which was renamed Bethune-Cookman College (later University). Mary McLeod Bethune was integral in the Civil Rights movement in Florida, founded the National Council of Negro Women, fought for women's suffrage, and served on President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Federal Council on Negro Affairs, also known as the Black Cabinet. Bethune has been recognized as a Great Floridian and inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in addition to numerous other honors which speak to her legacy and character.

Date: ca.
