Title: John G. Riley House Museum: Tallahassee, Florida

General note: John Gilmore Riley was born a slave in 1857. After the Civil War, Riley received formal education and began teaching in Wakulla County in 1877. In 1892, he became principal of the Lincoln Academy until his retirement in 1926. This home was built by Riley for his family in 1890 on the edge of the Smokey Hollow neighborhood, an African-American residential area in Tallahassee. Through the hard work and dedication of many individuals and organizations, the property was restored and is now the John G. Riley House Museum.

Title: FAMU head football coach Rudy Hubbard on the sidelines: Tallahassee, Florida

Date: September 15, 1984

General note: Rudy Hubbard was born in Hubbard, Ohio in 1946. He played running back at Ohio State University from 1964 to 1968. After graduation Hubbard was hired as an assistant coach by Woody Hayes, making him the first African American coach at OSU. In 1974, he took over the head coaching duties at Florida A&M University. Between 1974 and 1984 Hubbard amassed a record of 83-48-3 including two Black College National Championships (1976 and 1978) and an undefeated season in 1977. Hubbard was inducted into the FAMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.

General note: Reverend C. K. Steele (center left), Reverend Dan Speed (center right) and Reverend A. C. Redd (pastor of the St. James CME Church [now, 2009, the Florida Tax Watch headquarters on Bronough Street]) protested segregated seating on Tallahassee city buses by sitting in the middle instead of at the back of the bus. This action ended a boycott of nearly seven months, brought on by the arrest of two FAMU women students for sitting beside a white woman. As a result of the boycott, 21 members of the Inter Civic Council were convicted on charges of operating an illegal transportation system set up as a car pool without a franchise.

General note: Alonzo "Jake" Gaither became the head football coach at FAMU in 1945 and held that position until 1969. During his tenure, Gaither amassed 203 victories and won 85% of the games he coached. In 1984, the Florida Department of State designated Gaither as a Great Floridian for his significant contributions to the history and culture of Florida.

General note: General James was born in 1920. He graduated from Washington High School and received his degree from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Tuskegee became the training center for African American pilots during WWII and James completed his flying training there in 1943. He was commissioned in the Army Air Force and piloted supply planes in an all-black squadron. During the Korean War he flew 101 combat missions in fighter planes. During the Vietnam War he flew missions over North and South Vietnam. In 1975 he became the first African American 4 star General in the Air Force. He died of a heart attack in 1978.
