Shimmering lights - Paris

The Eiffel Tower lights up every evening from sunset to 1am (2am during the three months of summer), coupled with the lighthouse on the Tower top that sends out its light beams during the same hours. During the first 5 minutes of each hour, there is a glimmering display that lasts for 10 minutes.

According to the RSPB, there is no strict division between pigeons and doves, which share certain features, including small, rounded heads, small, slim bills with a small fleshy patch at the base, rounded bodies with dense, soft feathers, tapered wings and short, scaly legs, and cooing or crooning calls.

Symbolically, doves represent peace, love and happiness

Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor (previously known as Passerelle de Solferino) links the Musée d'Orsay and the Jardin des Tuileries.

Léopold Sédar Senghor (9 October 1906 – 20 December 2001) was a Senegalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who for two decades served as the first president of Senegal (1960–1980). Senghor was the first African elected as a member of the Académie française. He is regarded by many as one of the most important African intellectuals of the 20th century

Paris has many nicknames, but its most famous is "La Ville-Lumière" ("The City of Light"), a name it owes first to its fame as a centre of education and ideas during the Age of Enlightenment, and later to its early adoption of street lighting. Paris became known as Ville Lumière in the second half of the 19th century, when Baron Haussmann, who had been put in charge by emperor Napoléon III of the drastic transformation of Paris into a modern city, tore down whole quartiers of houses and narrow streets dating back to the Middle Ages, and opened large avenues which let light (lumière) come into the former medieval city.

Another explanation (in French) - Au XVIIIe siècle, à cause de la montée de la criminalité dans les rues et les coins sombres de Paris, le Préfet demande à tous les habitants de mettre des bougies ou des lampes à huile sur le rebord de leurs fenêtres, ceci afin d’éclairer entièrement la ville. Ce serait à ce moment là que Paris obtint le surnom de Ville Lumière.

Bateaux Mouches, Paris

Bateaux Mouches are open excursion boats that provide visitors to Paris with a view of the city from along the river Seine. Whilst Bateaux Mouches translates literally as "fly boats" ("fly" meaning the insect), the name comes from the fact that they were originally manufactured in boat yards situated in the Mouche area of Lyon.

Sacre Coeur

The Sacre Coeur was the result of a national vow by the Catholic Church in the aftermath of the tragic events of the 1870 Paris uprising (La Commune).

Entirely paid for by private donations, the Sacre Coeur was built between 1875 and 1914 amidst intense controversy with secularists and radicals. It was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

Architect Paul Abadie designed the Sacre Coeur in a Romano Bysantine style. Five architects continued the project after his death in 1885.

Bluebells

These are Spanish bluebells.

The Spanish Bluebell is usually found in open ground. It is unusual to find it in woods. When the flowers are fully formed, the stalk of Spanish Bluebells is straight. One way to help identify a Spanish Bluebell is to see if the flowers are all around the stalk. As all the flowers on a Spanish Bluebell are on the same side of the stalk and the stalk is thicker than the English Bluebell, the effect of gravity does not operate in the same way on the Spanish Bluebell so that it keeps its characteristic straight stalk.

The English Bluebell is usually found in woods. It is unusual to find it on open ground. When the flowers are fully formed, the stalk of English Bluebells curves downwards to give its characteristic look. One why to help identify an English Bluebell is to see if all the flowers are in the same side of the stalk. As all the flowers on an English Bluebell are on the same side of the stalk, the effect of gravity pulls the stalk over into a beautiful curve.

The English and Spanish Bluebells can cross pollinate but it is the attributes of the Spanish Bluebell that dominate. If the spread of the Spanish Bluebell is not halted, it will take over the English Bluebell.

The Church of Saint Peter of Montmartre (French: Eglise Saint-Pierre de Montmartre) is the lesser known of the two main churches in Montmartre in Paris, the other being the 19th-century Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Historically, however, it has the greater claim to fame, since, according to the earliest biography of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the church is the location at which the vows were taken that led to the founding of the Society of Jesus.

The T-Rex is located on the boarding platform of the Compagnie des Bateaux Mouches near Pont de L’Alma. It’s the work of the artist Philippe Pasqua and measures 7 metres by 4 metres, made of aluminium and chromium plated. It is composed of 350 “bones” moulded using an original skeleton found in China.

The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel) is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; 7.1 million people ascended it in 2011. The tower stands 320 metres (1,050 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Because of the addition, in 1957, of the antenna atop the Eiffel Tower, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building.
