Into Wanaka

Driving along the edge of Lake Wanaka NZ. I thought I would try a through the windscreen shot as a passenger while heading down the highway. This day was nice and bright so I could get the shutter speed up to 1/2000th second with a Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens. This one turned out not too bad compared to some I took on the duller days while moving. Some of the videos with this camera came out ok.
On this drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka, there are many beautiful spots, If I stopped at all of them along the way I probably would not be there yet.

Forest, wetland and snow caped mountains.
The last 100 km to Milford has spectacular scenery and many walking tracks.

On lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, for a few hours of fishing. Queenstown is about 8 kilometers behind us. Everyone caught a fish. No need to take ice like in the Northern Territory, just a container to put them in. The wind was icy cold but a great day out.

Formed about 15,000 years ago during the last ice age, a huge glacier carved out this lake. The lake is 399m at its deepest point and about 84 km long.

Around lake Wanaka NZ. Altho the highest peaks in this region are around 3,000 metres this shot at 200mm makes the mountains look dramatic and more imposing looming over the valley below. There is more mountain above the low clouds.

Milford sound

Entrance to Milford Sound, NZ. It was a cold bleak and windy day but magnificent scenery. We took a bus trip from Queenstown to here then onto the "Milford Wanderer". A great boat built along the lines of a traditional sailing scow with all the modern features.The last 100k's of so of the road trip to get here was absolutely spectacular going through the high passes and tunnels.

More of Milford and the numerous water falls. There were a few seals on the other side of those rocks, warming up, when we got around the corner.

If you want to see many waterfalls, this is the place to go. The boat here is the 'Lady of the Sounds' and is 34 metres long. I think this was called Bowen falls.

Mt Cook is a couple of k's to the left and the Tasman Valley is to the right. I was intending to get some star trails here but it was just too cold for me. Perfect night is was too. I took with me to NZ most of my lenses, my flash, also my infra red camera and tripod.

Buchanan Lodge, on the edge of Lake Wanaka, was a beautiful place to stay for a few days with the lake virtually at the doorstep and snow capped mountains behind. This was a nice sunny day too.

We took a helicopter flight over Fox, Tasman and Franz Josef Glaciers. This included a snow landing at the top but weren't allowed to stray too far from the chopper. NZ is a fantastic place to visit.
