I was pleased when this bright-eyed Crimson Rosella visited our yard. Here he watches me cautiously to see what I'm going to do.

... for taking the dog for a walk in the rain. I was just about to head for home when I spotted this rainbow so I was glad I had my camera with me. If you look closely upper left, you'll see there's actually a second rainbow above it.

An Aussie icon, the Laughing Kookaburra, in our backyard recently. It let me take a few shots, then flew silently away.

Our Border Collie, Trixie, in the garden. I didn't realise until later how she had just one daisy above her head. She is 8 years old, but she came to live with us around 4 years ago when her previous family's circumstances changed.

One of the family of Choughs that we share our garden with (or is it, they share it with us?). It was sitting on the fence preening itself (that's why the right shoulder looks a little funny), so I took a photo, as the red eye was very clear in the sun. If you view in Lightbox you'll notice it is pink around the edge.

I spent about 15 minutes watching this mating pair of dragonflies until my dogs got restless and I had to continue on our walk. They flew around and around, dipping in and out of the water, and several times he chased off intruders, with her still in tow!

I think they are Emperor Dragonflies. Not as colourful as some, but fairly large. I was pleased to see all the activity in our pond which had totally dried up until we got 84 mm (3") rain overnight recently.

We were about to take the dogs for a walk when we spotted these Kangaroos just outside the gate. We waited a couple of minutes until they had time to quietly move away.

(Didn't notice the old car tyre until later!)

We have several lizards living around our garden and recently I noticed this one was missing it's right front foot. It didn't seem to be impaired by the loss and ate some grapes that I put out for it.

I'm not sure if it was born that way or managed to survive an attack by a predator.

We only knew this Goanna was in our garden because a small flock of Choughs started flying around the tree and dive-bombing it. I took a few photos then enticed the Choughs away with some food to let it escape.

I was working at my computer late one night recently and had the feeling I was being watched. I looked up and saw the largest Huntsman spider I've ever seen. As soon as I moved it scurried back behind the frame, so I just had to leave it there.

Two days later Hubby found it in the bathroom, caught it in a large jar and released it outside. I measured the base of the jar (which it more than covered) and it was 13 cm (5").

I'm hoping some arachnologists will be able to confirm it is a male, and offer a reason that it has only one palp.

And yes, I have dusted away the cobweb since the photo was taken!

In this current heatwave, even the lizards are looking for a drink. We have many birdbaths around the garden for the birds, as well as a couple on the ground for the lizards.

Here a Shingleback comes in and looks cautiously around.

I was delighted to see this young King Parrot feeding in our garden. His mottled colours indicates that he is an "immature" male. I think that means less than a year old but I'm sure someone will tell me if that's wrong.

Most mornings when we take the dogs for a walk we are followed by this Red Wattlebird. I wonder if he wonders about the strange procession of humans and dogs. We enjoy his company anyway.

They are called "Wattle-birds" because of the red pendant wattle hanging below the ear.

It's hard to work out why some birds have little fear of humans and will eat out of your hand with a little coaxing, yet others (regular visitors to our garden) keep their distance. Here a female King Parrot, "Queenie" eats some parrot seed from Hubby's hand.

Glossy Black-Cockatoo

Recently we were about to take the dogs for their morning walk and were delighted when a small family of Glossies flew into the yard and stayed for a short while. There was a young one with them but it stayed hidden in the foliage while the parents sat on the branches of a dead tree.

The adult is having a big stretch.

Glossy Black-Cockatoos are considered uncommon so it's always a thrill to see them.

Friarbird's nest

Made of a wonderful mixture of paperbark and sheep's wool, I'm sure this nest would be warm and comfortable for the chicks of the Friarbird.

Since spotting this nest we have deliberately stayed away from the tree to give the birds their privacy, although it did mean missing any opportunties of seeing the chicks.

I wonder what the birds used before sheep's wool was available?

They're not everyone's favourite bird* but I'm always pleased to see them in our garden. This one is feeding on the Honeysuckle growing over a gate.

They're nesting nearby and I'll post a photo of their beautiful nest soon.

*Ugly, raucous .... they called all sorts of unpleasant names. Even it's full name is "Noisy Friarbird".

I was pleased to see this Cunningham's Skink peeping out of an old log on the edge of the garden. Every time I tried to get a little closer for a photo it popped down out of sight and waited until I'd gone back inside.

Well, perhaps I should've said "handsome", as this is a male Bronzewing pigeon. I love how the sunlight has brought out the colours in his wings.

Their full name is Common Bronzewing, but I dislike anything being called 'common'.

When I opened the living room curtains one morning recently this curious young Butcherbird was looking back at me. I thought he looked rather handsome against the background of Wattle.
