1303_0422 Bald Eagle

wild prairie man posted a photo:

In early March, the Pacific Herring were spawning in the Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the mainland. While human fishermen bobbed in their boats offshore, waiting for an opening, many bird species competed for the bounty. Bald Eagles would swoop low to snatch individual fish from the water; gulls would do the same. Later, the herring roe - floating in the water or washed up on shore - would feed countless thousands of gulls, ducks, and geese. This eagle was one of perhaps two dozen working the beach the day I arrived. Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

This is probably the same Common Merganser drake I photographed on several other occasions; I saw him daily during my stay at Tugwell Creek. The contrasty light here made exposure very difficult, even with the excellent dynamic range of the Nikon D800. I tried to hold some detail in the white feathers while not allowing the dark face to block up. Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

A bull Bison walked up to my car. It's always a thrill to see one this close, but the thought occurred that "nature" has no interest in the individual. Only species survival matters, and different species have evolved various strategies for survival. The North American Bison, however, has been so decimated as a species that today the individual does matter. So we must look at every buffalo as if it were the last one walking. Stand in awe. Perhaps it is time to treat every animal, every bird, every reptile, and every amphibian with the same respect. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

Yesterday there was hoarfrost and I got out early to the park. First wildlife I located were these bull Bison, frost-coated, uphill from my position. I was trying to find a shooting lane between the clumps of frosted grass. About two seconds after I shot this frame, they had enough of me and moved away, first at a determined walk, but then breaking into a gallop... and gone.
There was no place for me to run, no place to hide, so I made sure these Bison knew I was there. No point in startling them. They allowed me to shoot at relatively close range. I didn't linger long (lest they grow too curious). I thanked them, and went on my way. I bring an attitude of respect to every wildlife encounter; seems to work.
The other morning I hiked up to a long, flat piece of upland prairie known alternatively as "the Table" or "Tabletop". Rather nondescript itself, it offers wonderful views in all directions. To my surprise, the wildlife were putting on a show. At least a dozen mule deer watched me ascend, first on an easy trail, then along a sidehill and up a draw. At the top, this was my first sight! I haven't seen Bison in this location for about six years. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

Today's shots of a North American Badger were made one year ago, when I got lucky and was able to photograph one at close range on two occasions. It was diligently excavating prairie dog burrows - trying for a different sort of luck. I didn't see any kills, but these probably happened underground. Here, Badger has become curious about me and is waddling over to take a closer look. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

Two bull Bison face off on the prairie. Their "fight" consisted of some head butting and a lot of pushing. The larger bison on the left easily proved dominant, and I think that was the whole point: testing to establish or affirm status in the herd hierarchy.
1210_0822 Prairie Rattlesnake

One afternoon recently a Prairie Rattlesnake showed up on Centre Street, in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, between the village square and the Palais Royale Theatre. The throng of admirers quickly grew from two to a dozen, including out of town visitors snapping shots with their cell phones. Dialogue ensued. One person who offered to lop its head off was reminded that these are endangered in Saskatchewan and the fine is $10,000. She redeemed herself by producing a bucket and a pitchfork, and with some help from my extended tripod legs the critter was safely transferred to a holding receptacle. Shortly thereafter, staff from nearby Grasslands National Park arrived to relocate the snake out in its natural habitat. A job well done by all, and the most excitement of the entire weekend!

Squirrels like mushrooms. This Red Squirrel has climbed with his prize up to a tree branch at the edge of my campsite in Jasper National Park, Alberta. Exposure was difficult here because I couldn't get accurate meter readings with my subject in full light and a very dark background... so I took a guess and more or less hit it.
1209_1177 Bugling bull Elk

wild prairie man posted a photo:

This was a scary moment. Jasper National Park, in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, has some BIG elk, and one herd inhabits the Whistler's campground. I hear they moved in decades ago to get away from wolves. They can also be found along the highway margins and gravel flats of the Athabasca River, and I prefer to shoot these locations. Still, the campground elk are hard to resist.

So a few of us photographers lined up near some bleachers at a small amphitheatre at one end of a large, open field, and the action drifted uncomfortably close. This 7-point bull had reportedly beaten up a smaller bull the previous day, and he was in his glory. He had about a dozen cows and was frantically trying to keep them all together. I got this shot from the 3rd row of seats, figuring he probably wouldn't come in that far no matter how aggressive he became, but my friend Mary found herself in the front row at this precise moment. She did the right thing: stayed perfectly still. The rest of us held our collective breath. After a moment of assessing us, the big bull moved on.

This is a full frame image, no cropping. Too close!
