rock formations of Cordilleras de la Sal (Salt Mountains) near Atacama desert looking very much like the famous chocolate.

these Cordilleras were formed million of years ago when the bottom of the old lake started rising during the same processes that creted the Andes Mountains. the name of the place comes from the abundance of calcium sulphate in the rocks, and they do look like sprinkled with salt.

I borrowed the title from a book The Neanderthal's Necklace. In Search of the First Thinkers. the author, Juan Luis Arsuaga, is a paleoanthropologist and co-director of excavations at Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, where in one of the sites ["Sima de los Huesos", the pit of bones] the excavation team has located more than 5,500 human bones dated to an age of at least 350,000 years old. the sub-title of the book seemed an apt description for this pensive gorilla contemplating life in Bronx Zoo.

shy smile, but also smug, since the kid was eating a cereal bar that was supposed to be MY snack during the 8-hour day of hiking. don't let the bright colours fool you, the life for this kid is nowhere near cheerful, the wounds on the cheeks are result of cold burn due to the extreme temperatures of high altitudes.

a brief explanation about the composition - I was trying to implement something I read a while ago. when it comes to portraits in horizontal format, the classical composition is to place the main subject along the lines of the thirds, same as in landscapes or any other category. when person is placed much closer to the edge of the frame, like here, it is supposed to suggest insecurity, timidity, shyness. there's a famous picture of Woody Allen where he stands very, very close to the edge of the frame, the image is very strong, and captures perfectly the personality of the artist as we know him. on the other hand, placing the person right in the center conveys the sense of them being the center of the world, of dominating it.
