South Silver Creek Falls

I bumped this one up that I had posted a few months back because I couldn't get a good shot of it yesterday, and it is a significantly spectacular waterfall at the park, and I felt it had to be a part of the series.

Silver Creek Falls, a bit northeast of Salem, Oregon, is one of my favorite places. This waterfall is 177 feet high. There is a series of waterfalls, 10 of them, on an 8 mile loop. If you look close you can see the path below the rock wall.

Historic Sawmill

This 3 story sawmill was the heartbeat of a town called Whitney in the early 1900's, in eastern Oregon near Sumpter, where the photo of the dredge was taken. Whitney's sole purpose was to supply the lumber needed for the gold mining camps all around. Seventy-five people were employed here. Here is a link for pictures of remaining buildings and more information about the ghost town.

It sits way out in the middle of a field with No Trespassing signs at the fence, so one must have a good zoom to get a close shot.

Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge

Eastern Oregon.

Steam-powered gold dredging... yet another page in man's long history of raping the Earth for greed. So here sits this behemoth, amidst a seeming endless swath of ruined landscape, churned up and spit out by these machines. As you drive along the Powder River, you go past miles and miles of ravaged devastation. This land, once beautiful, is now good for nothing. Weeds don't even seem to grow well. Beyond sad.
This machine was built in 1935, and ran until 1954.

Crater Lake is indescribable from any view, but this one from Watchman Overlook is stunning and certainly worth the switchback hike up to the top. The lake is 6 miles across for a view you'll never forget. You can see the top of Wizard Island just beyond my feet. A must-see for any visit to Oregon.

Gray jays, also known as camp robbers around here, have little fear. This one swooped down from a distant tree to eat from my hand. An amazing experience! This was about 12 to 15 years ago.

The sky was exceptionally beautiful this day. It was the first time I've walked the jetty. What a fantastic view. I found it an odd feeling to be walking out on this little rocky strip with the water rolling on past and breaking behind me. It makes you feel real small when seeing and hearing the ocean rolling on either side you. Incredible.
