Another view of the remains of Porthgain slate mine. The light pollution on the left is coming from Dublin, over 100 miles away.

Star trails were a pain here, the lens fogged over whenever you left it alone for any amount of time.

A single 30 min exposure for the star trails with the lighting stacked from another exposure.

I came out here, to the arse end of nowhere to try and catch a few Orionid meteors. It's so dark up here you really can't see anything but the heavens up above. I'm not used to that, especially on a cliff top.

The meteors picked up from around 3am and became very regular, but the orange-red meteors were too fast and feint for the camera to detect it seems, even shooting at ISO 3200. It's rare I get a chance to see the milky way like this so I was satisfied.

My third trip to Bulgaria in eighteen months, and how the hell was I supposed to stay away from this place?! I've spent the best part of a week photographing it all together, and don't think I'd ever tire from it. I'll probably be back again next year.

With lightning storms adding to the drama we thought it was best to shoot the interior. The cloud was racing through the building, ruining the lighting plans I had for this room, so this shot was quite spontaneous, and wouldn't have been possible without my awesome Flickr buddy Xiao Yang's expert assistance.

I shot this for a little photo competition at work. The brief was to demonstrate the Sony HX-20v's ten frame per second burst mode and the theme was sport.

I set my shot up with three studio flash heads, intending to trigger them with the HX-20's flash, but flash is disabled in burst mode, understandably, so I used the modelling lights instead. Mounting the camera on a tripod I set it to manual, 1/1600, f3.2 @ ISO 800. Using manual focus I gauged the ball's point of impact and hoped the increased depth of field from the small sensor would keep it in focus as it rebounded from the floor.

As the shot evolved, I used some broken bits of brick and bounced the wet ball upon them to create an illusion of a forceful impact and to add some nice textures. I used a cutter to the left of the lens, partly to block the light and add more form to the ball, but also to prevent the lens getting splashed.

The image is straight out of the camera. Overall it's a bit underexposed, and the ball's not sharp but I was quite impressed with what you can do with a little compact and a touch of creativity.

The camera was placed on a wall for this one as I only had one tripod. I swear I straightened it, but it looks wonky as f**k!
