This blue pond near Biei (Hokkaidō, Japan) is changing its colour throughout the day and with the weather. Interestingly, it was created by accident when mineral-rich water from a nearby dam construction project accumulated and drowned some of the trees.

Hagoromo Waterfall Revisited

The Hagoromo waterfall (羽衣の滝, hagoromo no taki, literally “robe of feathers”) is at the end of a small walk about 10 minutes from Tenninkyō Onsen (天人峡温泉). It’s part of the Daisetsusan National Park and according to Wikipedia Japan Hokkaidō’s tallest and Japan’s second tallest waterfall with a water level difference of 270m. Unlike the last time I visited, the weather was miserable and daylight was quickly fading. That said, the colours still shine!

Shinsen-numa Wetlands

Previously, I have visited Shinsen-numa in summer. This time I was after some spectacular autumn colours, which I got – but the weather was bad, so no blue sky and blue water. The clouds, however, created a nice backdrop on the top of the mountain.

A view from the Toyohira River basin near the south end of Nakajima Park in Sapporo, Japan. I shot this photo with the Olympus 35mm Macro lens – because I was out to do some macro work! Turns out this lens is just as capable of landscape pictures ;)

Nakafurano Fields II

From a 2006 visit to the colourful fields in Nakafurano, Hokkaido, Japan. I believe the fields belong to the Tomita farm. These photos also show two things: cheap and old cameras (here my compact Casio Z-57) produce lower image quality, but that doesn’t mean the photos can’t be beautiful :)

The Hagoromo waterfall (羽衣の滝, hagoromo no taki, literally “robe of feathers”) is at the end of a small walk about 10 minutes from Tenninkyō Onsen (天人峡温泉). It’s part of the Daisetsusan National Park and according to Wikipedia Japan Hokkaidō’s tallest and Japan’s second tallest waterfall with a water level difference of 270m. It’s well worth the drive, as the landscape up to the fall is also quite beautiful (see my Hokkaidō Summer photo).

Cosmos flowers (Cosmos spp.) are hugely popular in Japan, and seeing them planted and growing wild all around is part of my “being in Japan”-feeling. I took this photo during the Cosmos exhibition in the Takino Suzuran Park near Sapporo.

Beautiful pink blossoms on an old cherry blossom tree: this year I tried experimenting with more distant photos rather than focussing on close-up shots. The contrast between the blue sky and the pink blossoms was fabulous!

Another monarch (or wanderer as some in Australia call it), Danaus plexippus, again from the Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve. It was almost impossible to get a good shot as the wind kept happily blowing the flowers around!

A tropical summer thunderstorm hit the Gold Coast that afternoon. When I returned from university, the storm was luckily over already, but had left some great cloud formations. I took this picture while walking home from my bus stop.

I think this photo looks a bit more spectacular than the shot I took when I visited Hagoromo in summer!
