Arambol Beach with a green boat, a yellow flag, a beach shack and a winter's cycle of life unfolding in Goa

Arambol is in the northern belt of the great beaches of Goa. It is far enough to deter the ordinary tourists so you do not have vast hordes of gawking and hustling males to clutter up the sand, the sun and the sea. In general it is peaceful and beautiful.

A fishing boat in green colors flying a flamboyant yellow flag fluttering gaily in the sea breeze looked wonderful in a late evening with the sun playing out a marvelous spread of light on a otherwise stormy day.

This was shot right next to the image of the small Shiva temple appearing in the comments. YOu can see a patch of yellow in your right corner and that is the very same temple top.

This is the water in November in Goa. The greenish pallor is because of the fact that it is riverine and there are lots of trees around.

Around November, The waters become gentle as the great summer and monsoon churn of the Arabian sea subsides. The dirt settles down to the bottom of the sea.

These are fishing boats that go out to the sea. Nowadays there is an outboard motor that is used to propel the boats owned mostly by christian Goans, but a few years ago you saw black wooden long boats that would be pushed out to the sea. A daily ritual in the 80s on the Baga and Calangute beaches. The great tourist bustle has marginalized the traditional fishermen bar a few.
The fishing trawler "Bibinbinish" of a green Moslem declaration is getting ready to be hauled in to dry dock during the monsoon season. That is the time when fishing is generally banned in India.

The workers are getting the haulage right by placing wooden planks underneath to guide the boat onto the rails. A complicated maneuovre it is with wafer thin margins for errors. One of the key workers is neck deep in the water and has the toughest job in hand.

Notes on Photography

This has been shot with a wide angle lens at 14mm. The trawler is large and the perspective of the camera on the ground accentuates the height and largeness of the vessel which gets even more highlighted because of the wide angle lens. Most people use wide angle lenses for landscape photography but to use it in day to day activities requires acute understanding of perspective and distortion which if studied well can lead you to some outstanding images.

Yes a strange looking checkerboard of a boat moored mid river on the Sal which flows into the sea in South Goa. This is further south of the Leela Kempinski Hotel in Cavelossim.

One thing is for sure. The owner of San Anthony - the boat, has to be an avid fan of racing what with the black and white squares on his boat. Or do you think he is a chess afficionado, a rather bleak prospect.
Dal Lake, Srinagar, Kashmir - A shikara boat heads for the Char Chinar

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

Srinagar was under an ominous pall of smog. This was early November around Diwali time.
No celebrations in this state of Kashmir. The sympathisers, specially the youngsters , and the Mullahs who exhorted the faithful Moslems to strive for an indepnedant Kashmir had been holding ransom the city and much of the countryside with their frequent calls for strikes. Every road was littered with policemen and para military forces in a show of strength to combat the occasional stone pelting youth, a mode reminiscent of the Palestinian protest against the Israeli forces.

The sad spectacle was the state administration and the government. One would expect that it functioned in some way. Conspicuous by their absence, the complications in that beautiful state can perhaps only be laid at the door step of the conniving politicians. The worst was the best here.

Dal lake was dull. A few colorful shikaras broke the grey monotony ever so often. The iconic Char chinars in the distance were what one aimed for this day. I wonder if the state will ever be able to come up the way as it exists, totally defunct and aimless with the youth misguided in their zeal and fervor.

The only bright spot. The Army handling the situation.. Thank the Lord for small mercies. Otherwise the state continues to be in a dull haze of smog that seems to be setting in forever.
Dal Lake, Srinagar, Kashmir - A shikara boat heads for the Char Chinar

The boat glides back after garlanding the Christs Pedestal

The rains had been pouring over the Goan countryside for many a days in the yearly onslaught of the Rain Gods. This heavenly deluge known as monsoon is what makes and shapes India every year.

In June on the day of the celebration of Sao Joao, the rains were specially fierce and the Gods cried their hearts out. The weather cleared up only very late in the evening at the venue and much music and cheery boooze flew down the gullets of the revellers. The stoic and stiff faced young Goans at last did manage to wear a smile and dance the evening away.

The Sao Joao festival in Goa is concentrated around Shiolim and people gather along side the small river and place flower koppels on their heads and the folks from the fishing community place a garland around a 6 -10 feet high white pedestal of christanity with a cross on top.
The antecedents of the festival are steeped in the christian religion and its practices and you can always look it up on the internet, if you are so inclined.

Much rain yes, raincoats were deriguer. Not so for the participants here who are moving in the Glowing Stars special
Racing in Kerala - Champakara Boat Race

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

The Age of Exploration dawned in the 15th Century with a desperate effort by maritime kingdoms of Europe to open up a new sea route to India. Vasco da Gama did find it ultimately in 1498 ( no the boat above is not the one he came in ;-)) and that allowed the overland silk route of more then a thousand years to become a thing of the past.

It was in Kerala that Vasco da Gama made his landfall and changed the way history was going to be written with the ascendancy of the European states. That would last for almost 5 centuries,

Cut to now, European empires are long dead and gone and buried as mere text in history books. USA and China rule the roost.

Kerala where Vasco da Gama set foot centuries ago continues to exist as it did then. A mix of tradition, rituals and ancient customs still define this land. Kerala remains an odd ball of beliefs of the past with a few tinges of outside influence. Marxism is the only import that seems to have taken root firmly in the minds and hearts of the populace

There are many reasons to visit Kerala. The Ayurvedic healing commerce trade, the beaches, the forests, the hill stations, the exotic fairs and festivals. However, the single biggest reason to visit Kerala is for its backwaters. Shallow channels of saline and fresh water that run north and south in the central part of kerala. That is a different world altogether.

Here you see a boat race run on the backwaters. This is at Champakara which is in Cochin itself. There are other boat races too. Alleppy now known in its tongue twisting avatar of Allapuzzah, being the most famous one.

Pallolem, Goa - some more off beat boat takes in a blue sarong

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

Pallolem has a beautiful beach and a lovely strip of backwater where a small rivulet joins the sea at its northern end. You can hire a small country boat, with or without a protective sun awning and go on a old style leisurely cruise on a wooden boat rowed for about 45 minutes. It is silent serene and beautiful.

Here the last rays of the setting sun catch the skin tones delicately before they must vanish into the haze of the day gone by.

I am having trouble calibrating the brightness levels of the monitor and it is a bitch to work out the correct values. The automatic and manual settings of the monitor and then the same for the video card are not really working too well to give an optimum brightness level.

So just holler as to what is the most optimally lit photograph on your screen. I am adding two other frames in the comments for comparison

This is from 2010 in the monsoons.

Goa is still under the grey, dank , sunless spell of a highly precipitative
monsoon in 2010. It has been raining incessantly for almost 20 days now.

This is a double rainbow and I hope you find the gold at the end of them.
Fishing Trawlers at Fort Kochi

A gathering of fishing trawlers at Fort Kochi in Kerala on a mellow beautiful evening in the year 2008.

Notes on Photography
The light is sometimes amazing. Mostly just before an atmospheric storm of just after. On such days, if one is lucky, be sure to have lots of media for storage and just shoot like crazy.
The light was so good that the colors were rich and resplendent, so much so, that I had to reduce it quite a lot in this frame
This has been shot with a wide angle lens and cropped just a bit to make the boats a tad more bulky. The cluster of boats made a beautiful geometrical design which is what I intended to shoot but while setting up the shot the trawler "Ammaniya" came in and parked in front providing a specific subject in the cluster.

Baga was perhaps the best beach in Goa. The waters were gentle here mostly because of the rivulet that was there.
Now it is crowded by the hordes of tourists who invade the beaches of Goa in the winter.

Baga and Calangute see the most activity and it is like a carnival every day.

The portion where the river runs is comparatively not so over run.

The food district is nearby - Brittos, Lila's Cafe - legendary destinations to eat in
Trawler Cochin Kerala

A beautiful bay of sorts straddles a vast stretch of water between the junctions of the islands of Fort Kochi and Willingdon with the mainland mass of Cochin.

This natural harbour has local ferries built long, boring and tinny that ply between the mainland and fort Kochi and Vyapeen. There are boats aplenty. You can see cargo vessels steaming in and out to Willingdon Island and some times even ocean liners that decide to make Cochin as a stop. Infact I remember having seen QE II berthed there once. This was in March 2007, a year before it was bought over by the Dubai World group. The food was pretty good at one of the restaurants that they had opened out to a few guests of the Port Trust authorities. I have no idea how I managed to be abroad.

There are slow houseboats which take a round trip from the mainland Taj Hotel to the Taj Malabar hotel on Willingdon Island. Catering to the hotel guests for the usual sunset trip to the fishing nets of Fort Kochi and Vyapeen. Often I have been on board these old wooden vessels accompanying some guests. It has always been a good experience, affording some beautiful photographic takes.

On one of such trips , the above photograph of the fishing trawler was shot.
Coracles and the Urban Skyline

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

Fishing is a perilous profession on flat bamboo saucers made waterproof with animal hide and a bit of bitumen. It requires precision skills to handle a coracle in the tricky waters. I tried it once, a long time ago, and kept on spinning to no purpose.

A coracle is a very primitive mode of transport on water. The surprise is that it still exists in the tall towers and modern day bridges and motorised boats and ships.

The two coracles after a bit of crab catching head home on the junction of Thavera in
Cochin and the Willingdon Island. Home for these 4 happens to be bit of land right under the bridge.
