Hunooz, Dilli dur Ast

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

Strange monoliths ok..microliths rise up on the boundary walls of the mausoleum of Ghias-ud-din Tughlaq. I have no idea as to whether the triangular stones atop the 3 horizontal ones making small minarets all around the wall have some cultural significance or are merely attempts at aesthetic presentation.

This wall is for a circular part of the mausoleum which has 2 uncovered holes in the middle and one must tread wearily in this area. This would be roughly the area from where the photos below /appearing in the comment was shot.

I will not repeat the strange tale of Ghias ud Din as I have already narrated that in the previous post. Though let me mention that the current day usage of the expression "Dilli dur ast" ( Delhi is not close by , it is far away ) is linked intimately to events in the life and death of Ghias-ud-din Tughlaq. You may use it in your daily speech without a whiff of an idea that behind that aphorism lies the tragic tale of an Emperor of Delhi who died in a convenient accident in Kara in Uttar Pradesh on the river Ganges. Ghias-ud-Din was hurrying back to Delhi from fresh conquests in the Bengal area and it was here near Allahabad that a reception was organised by his son to welcome him. A shamiana (tent) was made to fall on the Emperor and in the end he never did make it to Delhi. Dilli dur ast.

P.S It is rare to get skies like this in Delhi but it does happen sometimes. I just came back from Dehradun and the skies there are legendary, reminded me of Kerala. So this is a cliche sky shot for now.
Zorro was here.

What did Ladakh do
To earn the Mark of Zorro
I see no big haciendas of Governors
Where frocky frolics take place.
While the poor peasants suffer.

No perhaps not!
It just can not be. Surely!

Maybe, we need a caped vigilante
not only in the sands of this desert scape
Go make a mark of Zorro !
Making Gur In India - Photo 3 - Feeding the cane

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

This photograph is Photo 3 of 10 on the art of making unrefined sugar from sugar cane

There is a stack of sugar cane and two men feed a rotary crusher operated by a diesel engine.

You can view the 10 photos in a chronological order at the wordpress blog to see the entire series. A few photos have already been published on flickr, the balance will now go up one by one in a short time frame.

-------------------------

If you have tasted sugar as sweet as this, with its crumbly flaky texture that melts in your mouth. Then, you have attained Sweet Nirvana. Chocolate does not even come close to this.

Another take from the small town of Chhutmalpur where this not so small unit was working to make some really red red gur ( jaggery).

Just to recap --

As you come out of the Shivalik ranges that form the southern bastion of Dehradun and head for the dust fields of Delhi, you pass through quaint rugged settlements populated by a rustic breed of farmers, tillers, cattle keepers, cut throats and other remanants of the Huns that invaded the country many centuries ago.

Chhutmalpur is one such sleepy place where in the season they crush sugarcane and make "gur". From my early childhood days I remember seeing open fire pits blazing away in the night and workers silhouetted in the flames. The sweet heady aroma of raw sugar cane juice being boiled in large cast iron pans and the leftover acrid tingle of molasses was a smell that one grew up in the valley of Dehradun. It still has the same overpowering presence that it had back then.

I was passing Chhutmalpur enroute to Dehradun after photographing the Pushkar Cattle Fair. It was a good time to stop. There were no other passengers with me and this was like Childhood Revisited.

I am reminded of a book " Rerun at Rialto " written with great finesse by Tom Alter where he writes of this very place in one of his stories. A book worth reading for its simple easy narrative and some unexpected twists that make the stories so much more endearing. That was ages ago. I once read voraciously but rarely read fiction now. This book is a treat and along with books of Ruskin Bond, a beautiful easy read.

Notes on Photography

This photograph was in the interior of a large thatched hut with its side open. The light not so great for a stock camera lens. So this was shot on as is metering to take in the balance of the harsh outside light and the dark smoke swirling interior with crepuscular sun rays being made in the smoke from the top shaft opening. Metered and focused for the golden flow of the sugar cane juice it would be adequate to show case the stairways to Sweet Heaven. So that was it.
Toranmal - Eat Simple - Live well

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

The whole of Toranmal appeared to be malnourished.

Malnourished can get a little confusing at times. Sometimes a lean wiry and mean build is a function of a genetical predisposition and sometimes it merely means that you walk huge distances and eat good healthy food that is non fattening. Maybe all of them apply to Toranmal with a pinch of malnourishment thrown in for good measure.

A family of 4 sat on a parapet running along the big lake in Toranmal. They seemed to have walked considerable distance and had head loads stashed alongside. They were eating the simplest and perhaps the healthiest of meals. A thick roti of coarse grain with some dry vegetables and fiery hot chutney as the only accompaniment. The mother, waifish and small appeared to be a girl herself The daughter perhaps wondered with her mouthful of roti as to what was wrong with the man pointing a strange object. She seemed apprehensive yet curious.

In the extreme northern end of Maharashtra abutting the state of Madhya Pradesh is a land cut off from the influences of the urban Indian state. The region of Toranmal is not so fully cut off that stray visitors can make occasional forays into its vast mountainous areas where even the writ of the Government does not run large and no functionary of the State government may have visited the interiors in the last 100 years. Distances are measured in units of "a day's walk" or more.

Civilisation as envisaged in shirts, pants, shoes and intrusive toursits is ongoing as of now and soon the pristine and pure will change to another paradise gone bust. The children wear clothes which obviously were tailored for some others and ostensibly sold as 2nd hand and sans buttons most times.

The predominant community is of the Pawra tribals who mind their own business. Go visit this place and contribute to its loss of innocence.

This is a Pawra woman deep in a forest collecting dry twigs and branches. The dress sense is impeccable. The colors bold and bright in 3 shades of red and one of blue carried off with aplomb here. Just another day in the jungles of India.
A Tasteful of Trance at Kodungaloor Bharani in Kerala

Kerala with its pristine blue waters, clear unhazed skies and people who do not make an avocation out of cheating visitors is perhaps the best India can offer to a tourist. Aesthetic landscapes are not the only thing that Kerala can boast of. The deeply insular state has preserved its centuries old rites and customs in toto. If you ever venture beyond the organised pop culture shows of Kathakali and Kalari into the rural heartland of Keralan people you will find it an everflowing wonder of culture, rites and traditions harmoniously preserved and sanctified in the homes and hearts and temples of Kerala.

Kodungaloor near Cochin is a strange exotic land. It was once a beautiful bay and port till sudden changes in the tidal and river currents wiped out the ancient port. It houses this non descript temple complex bang in the middle of the National Highway 17 that runs along the western coast of India. The road infact circumambulates around the complex.

During the month of March every year on the Bharani day, religion is turned on its head. People descend to this temple to shout choice and the filthiest of abuses to the ruling deity and to the ruling leity in general. Sacrifcial cocks are brought in. Trance is in. Women and men wearing red go into hypnotic trance and carry huge metal cleavers with which they crack their skull skins to let blood flow. It is a mad rush of faces, dresses and people. Taking photos is the toughest time as there in not an inch of space.

Chandigarh. Winter 2008.
The sunshine is welcome. The cold in November just divine. The city Beautiful with its beautiful people.
This was a garden the name of which I do not recollect but the city has many of them. In the mornings you have no crowds. There is peace and there is quiet that rules in the beautiful gardens.

ps - This garden was called Bougainvillea
Happy Trance in Kerala !

Taking photos is the toughest time as there is not an inch of space.
A Drummer in Pune

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

The thundering roll of the staccatto beats on these large drums is the heart of the percussion which the city of Pune witnesses for almost 11 days as the devout and the believers live their devotion not only with their prayers but with their larger then life sound.

Large durms , larger sound. Elemental and energetic and frenetic, it involves the people into a communal frenzy of a march and a dance. The goose step of the Maharashtra involves deft footwork and stylised short arm movements and you can see many engaged in it while taking out processions of the Lord Ganesha for immersion to a nearby water body.

Some of these drumming groups are impeccably dressed for the occasion and the procession is accompanied by flag bearers who play out consummate moves on the streets holding aloft the standard on metal pipes. You also get to see clapper groups called "lezim" which is like a exercise routine set to a dance rhythm.

All in all a grand spectacle. On the last auspicious day - the 11th one, the largest processions are witnessed and there is nary a place to be found in the heart of the city area. The main road crossings are jampacked with the dhol tasha performers and it is impossible to shoot anything in that maddening rush of people, police, performers and the beat of the music.

For me it was a long amble through the narrow lanes and by lanes of Pune city. Not much of actual large groups shooting because of the excessive crowd. One of the camera cards had an issue and the date was corrupted.

One of the camera cards had an issue and the data got corrupted. This is from the other camera.
The Drum Beater from Pune

The thundering roll of the staccatto beats on these large drums is the heart of the percussion which the city of Pune witnesses for almost 11 days as the devout and the believers live their devotion not only with their prayers but with their larger then life sound.

Large durms , larger sound. Elemental and energetic and frenetic, it involves the people into a communal frenzy of a march and a dance. The goose step of the Maharashtra involves deft footwork and stylised short arm movements and you can see many engaged in it while taking out processions of the Lord Ganesha for immersion to a nearby water body.

It is a regular sight this.

The marching bands in India dressed in outlandish costumes of the British Raj is a common sight at all marriages where the bride or a groom is from India. ( The south India keeps itself assiduously away from such beautiful displays of connubial cornucopia).

The band members in these marriage bands learn a few tunes from "Come September" "Tequila" to Hindi Bollywood songs and for most parts are from traditional communities engaged for generations in the art of entertainment in India. It continues to be a profession of the poor who play at the goings on of the rich and the middle class.

At times, like the religious ceremonies requiring much music and display, the brass bands are again in play. This is in Pune where the Sangram Band leads a pageantry of the Ganesha idol being taken on a round in Narayen Peth.

This is the season in Pune for the Dhol and Tasha practicioners as they lay their percussion overlays and elemental rhythms on the streets for the Ganesha celebrations. Drum beating is community event in Pune and ardent drummers practice for months to make their synchronized beating a fanfare on the days when the God Ganesha is escorted for immersion.

The bed of the Mutha, that was a river once and is now a vent for the overflow of the barrages upstream has a road running parrallel to it. Much practice takes place here in the preceding months as groups gather in the evening to beat out their rhythms. The murky sodium vapor lamps, the dirty water turned ambivalent in the night light and groups of 10-20 drummers beating out their hearts content is a sight and sound to witness and cherish.

Right now the season is running and the drummers are much to be seen as they take out the lead in the fanfare for the idols when they are installed or immersed. WIll put up the colorful drummers in a while.

On the Ganesha Chaturthi day, I was out with Vasundhara and her friend Shireen to shoot the sights of the pageantry in the Laxmi Road area of Pune. Witnessed one procession where the drummers were not the usual Marathi dhol players. There was a clutch of drummers from Punjab who beat out a totally different rhythm that is faster and less heavy. Here is one of them in all his synthetic leopard skin finery.
Under the Fluttering Flag of India - The young ones of India March - To A New Beginning

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

The good news is that there is a hiatus in the protests as the ruling government has acceded to certain demands on enactment on laws relating to prevention of corruption in India. The laws are yet to be framed and passed and one hopes that it does happen soon enough. The significant part is that the young population of India supported the protest enmasse and were responsible for the success of the movement.

Here are some of the young ones in the support march on 18th August at Pune. Walking with ethnic elan on the sidewalks of the Jangli Maharaj Road under the fluttering tricolor flag of India.

Yes a new wind is blowing. And it smells of Change !
Viva ! Shades of Cats - Goa Carnival Panaji , India

India has been witness to tumultuous events over the past 15 days.

Anna Hazare, a frail old man of 74 years undertook a hunger strike in Delhi to protest against the Government not bringing in legislation to lay down stricter norms to punish corruption in India.

India is notorious for its corruption and its concomitant ills. This piece of legislation had not been passed for 42 years as the parliamentarians did not pass the Bill in the Parliament. Eight times it was tabled and eight times it was allowed to lapse.

The hunger strike has yielded results. What it has achieved is that the youth of India have galvanised into a cohesive whole to support the movement and the government was forced on its knees and passed a resolution to include amendments laid down in the demands.

A revolution of sorts. No blood letting, no killings.. Non violence at its best.

I am away from Pune from where I covered a part of the protest but now it is over. I am stuck in a hill station in the Western Ghats where for days it has been raining non stop. Perhaps the shoot will never get done what with the rains not stopping.

Here is a splash of color, the posed rendition of Cats from 5 artists who were atop a float and the girls were busy posing for themselves. This was shot with a wide angle lens so the clarity is never ever going to be that good.
Kaaavady Kerala India

Kavady is a term used in Sanskrit for a harness on ones shoulder used for balancing a load. In its modern day usage it is more a religious assignment of balancing ones life or commitment to the principles of goodness.

You may have heard of Thai Poosam which has enough visual mind space on exotic and arcane rights of the Hindus as believers. Most of it now a days originates from Malaysia and South Africa where there are significant numbers of Tamil Hindu populations who settled down there centuries ago.

Visithra has some excellent Thai Poosam shots of this year as well as the earlier years.
Check out ..................

I witnessed one deep religious and serious Kaavady ceremony in Trivandrum in Kerala in March 2008. I drove down from Cochin early in the morning for the shoot.

Doctor Robin and I were there to shoot and it was solemn and a serious affair and the belief unbelievable. For the first time in my life I saw no smiling faces of piety. The faces were all half in trance and wore expressions of solemn seriousness that was unnerving at most times. The reason for that was evident in a rather short while.

This yellow wall with deeply recessed light funnel is located at a place near Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra. It was the home where Meher Baba spent his time. The Baba has a large following of enlightened followers. He took a vow of silence and never uttered a word in public in the last few decades of his life.

He is easy to follow and non obtrusive. There is no hype associated with his teachings or the methodology of his disciples. There is no effort whatsoever to try and garner funds and followers or to enforce a belief system.

The VIBGYOR of the colors stands exemplified here in this house that was built in 1938. Though the VIB has become BIV, most probably because of some not so color aware followers who may have undertaken repairs and replacement.
( Edit April 2013 - I have been told subsequently that this was Baba's very own creation of a flag and this was the color scheme for the flag that he wanted. So all my hypothesis on a wrong VIBGYOR does not hold any water or color )
Portrait of a Seller of Lotus Flowers and also a Mother at the Dagdu Seth Ganapati venue in Pune

Anoop Negi posted a photo:

An impoverished but tough looking mother sat on the roadside with a plastic pail full of lotus flowers. A child sat in her laps eating kachauri.

People were milling around in the Mandai area of Pune for the famed Dagdu Seth Ganapati idol where long queues build up and a logistical nightmare is always playing its tune. Lots of police, lots of other help, lots of sightseers, lots of shoppers and lots of devotion. I took a weary round of the place and found it too crowded and I wondered if God really exists in such places made of commercial piety.

This is the season of Ganapati consecration and immersion, an immensely popular religious event in the calendar of the city and its Marathi inhabitants.

The mother and child looked into the frame but briefly. The black and white is made for a gritty and antique and grungy look.
