Istana Woodneuk , Singapore

First built in 1854, this house was first known as “Tyersall House”. In 1860, a Malay sultan took over the property and the house was demolished. The new house, Istana Woodneuk ('Istana' means palace in Malay) was built in 1890 and completed 2 years later. In 1905, it was badly burnt because of faulty electrical wiring. This house has been abandoned since 1907.

Today, Istana Woodneuk is little known by Singaporeans. It stays hidden behind a huge white gate along Tyersall Avenue. The path to the abandoned palace is one blocked by fallen trees and thick undergrowth. It's such a pity that a building which such a glorious past has become lost in the history of Singapore.

Notting Hill Carnival 2010, Main Parade

Held each August Bank Holiday since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest festival celebration of its kind in Europe. Every year the streets of West London come alive, with the sounds and smells of Europe's biggest street festival. Twenty miles of vibrant colourful costumes surround over 40 static sound systems, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, over 40,000 volunteers and over 1 million Notting Hill carnival revellers.

Had to put my relatively new Helios 44m to some use and hence this shot. I somehow still prefer the 50mm Pentacon despite the excellent reviews on this lens. The bokeh seems harsher despite having an 8-blade diaphragm and the images come out softer. I guess this lens would probably work better on female portraiture.

Low tide @ St Michael's Mount, Cornwall

Off the coast of Cornwall stands a strange little island, separated from the mainland by a causeway which only reveals itself during low tide. According to legend, it was built by a giant called Cormoran who terrorised local farmers by wading ashore and raiding their flocks for food. A bounty was placed on his head and a local boy named Jack devised a plan to kill the giant. Jack made his way to the island in the dead of night and dug a deep pit, then, waking the giant from his slumber with a blast on his horn, the giant hastily gave chase falling into the pit. Jack became known as Jack the Giant Killer and was the pride of the town.
