Stewart's Mansion

The mansion was built in 1926 as a West End retreat for family of George Sealy Jr. Later, Maco Stewart, founder of Stewart Title Co., bought the 8,200-square-foot Spanish Colonial mansion as his resort home. The structure overlooks Lake Como and is in the area where pirate Jean Laffite is said to have buried his treasure. The mansion suffers from deterioration, but many original features, such as the tiled courtyard and interior murals, are still intact. Intense paranormal activity is rumored to saturate the property, but seems largely unsubstantiated.The mansion has been on Galveston Historical Foundation’s Heritage At Risk list since 2004.

Pleasure Pier

In May of 1948, the Galveston Pleasure Pier opened on Seawall Boulevard, as the largest amusement park of its kind in the country. It met its fate in 1961 at the hands of Hurricane Carla.

This May will mark a new page in the history books, when the 1,130-foot Pleasure Pier opens again — this time under the Landry's name — in the original location, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Preliminary planning has been in the works for years, and construction commenced months ago to fix the damaged pilings (the iconic Flagship Hotel stood in the spot from 1965 until 2008, when it was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike). Tilman Fertitta, Landry's sole owner, already runs multiple hotels and restaurants on Galveston Island, so he wanted to do something different.

"This will be a project that will totally change Seawall Boulevard," said Fertitta during an elaborate press conference — complete with cotton candy and a popcorn machine — at the company's Houston headquarters. In a room filled with news crews and the scent of fried food, Fertitta revealed mockups for the $60 million project.

Fertitta's biggest concern is where he's going to put all of the people.
Think Coney Island meets the Magic Kingdom: With carnival rides and roller coasters (there will be 16 to choose from), restaurants (including requisite turkey legs and sausage on a stick booths, plus the first Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Texas) and souvenir shops, Landry's is marketing the Pleasure Pier as a fun, family-friendly destination for tourists and locals alike.

Mayor Joe Jaworski of Galveston believes that the Pleasure Pier will bring "color, shape and sizzle to the Seawall."

"This will bring a shine and a glow that has been missing for a long time," Jaworski said.

The pier will be open year round (daily throughout the summer months, and Friday through Sunday during the off-season) and will create more than 600 jobs. Galveston-born Fertitta expects other economic activity to follow in Pleasure Pier's wake — and though Landry's already owns a large chunk of real estate along Galveston's seawall, he says he wishes the company had more.

Pleasure Pier admittance tickets will cost $8 for children and $11 for adults, or attendees can upgrade to a "Ride wristband" for full access to the pier's amenities. A family of four can gain entrance and access to rides for $90.

The goal is to create a safe, "controlled environment," one where admittance is monitored (real estate on the 6,500-person capacity pier is extremely valuable, says Fertitta) and parents can feel comfortable letting their children roam. And one that appeals to all.

"A family can be a young family or a couple that's 40 years old," Fertitta told CultureMap. He says that Pleasure Pier will offer options for everyone, from kids' games to live music on the bandstand stage.

One might immediately worry that the revamped Pleasure Pier, in its prime but precarious location over the Gulf of Mexico, might suffer the same fate as the ventures that came before it — but Fertitta's biggest concern is where he's going to put all of the people.

The Fort Worth Stockyards is a historic district that is located in Fort Worth, Texas, north of the central business district. The 98-acre district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District in 1976. They are a former livestock market which operated under various owners from 1866.

Horsetail Fall flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. It's a small waterfall that many people don't notice, but it has gained popularity as more and more people have noticed it can glow orange during sunset in mid to late February.

The most popular place to see Horsetail Fall seemingly afire is El Capitan picnic area, west of Yosemite Lodge and east of El Capitan (see map below). The "firefall" effect generally happens during the second half of February. A clear sky is necessary for the waterfall to glow orange.

Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a basin that has no outlet to the ocean. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp. Mono Lake is also notable for containing GFAJ-1, a rod-shaped extremophilic species of bacteria that may be capable of metabolizing the usually poisonous element arsenic.

The human history of Mono Lake is associated with its productive ecosystem. The native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the larvae of the alkaline flies that live in the lake. When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from flowing into the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds. The Mono Lake Committee formed in response, winning a legal battle that forced Los Angeles to partially restore the lake level.

Pedernales Falls State Park is located 10 miles (16 km) east of Johnson City. The park is on the Pedernales River, 14 miles (23 km) southwest of the river's mouth at Lake Travis.

Before 1970, the area that is now Pedernales Falls State Park was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened in 1973.

Many of the activities in Pedernales Falls State Park center around the Pedernales River: swimming, tubing, wading and fishing. The park also has a number of picnic areas and campsites, including some primitive campsites that require a hike of two miles or more to reach. There are also 19.8 miles (31.9 km) of hiking and mountain biking trails, 10 miles of equestrian trails, and 14 miles of backpacking trails.

Forth Worth Coliseum

The Cowtown Coliseum is a 3,418-seat multi-purpose arena in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. The Coliseum hosts weekly rodeos. It hosts local sporting events and concerts and began hosting the Fort Worth Sixers of the National Indoor Football League starting in 2007.

The venue was built in 1908 and was refurbished in 1986. Elvis Presley once performed there. Part of the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, the structure is the first ever indoor arena for rodeos in the United States.

Amaryllis is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species. The better known of the two, Amaryllis belladonna, is a native of South Africa, particularly the rocky southwest region near the Cape. For many years there was confusion amongst botanists over the generic names Amaryllis and Hippeastrum, one result of which is that the common name "amaryllis" is mainly used for cultivars of the genus Hippeastrum, widely sold in the winter months for their ability to bloom indoors. Plants of the genus Amaryllis belladonna are known as belladonna lily, naked lady, amarillo or, in South Africa, March lily.
