I photographed this lavender iris on my front porch railing on a sunny morning this past April. I have huge clumps of them that continue to spread in the gardens in my front yard. You can see more of them in the background (Iris-keh?) There are a couple of macro shots of this same iris below. Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you are all have a fabulous weekend! ♥

I photographed this little butterfly at the Butterfly Farm in St. Thomas, US Virgin Island last week. I don't remember the name of it, but love the design on it's wings. I was going to crop this closer, but fell in love with all the vines and greens in the background. Hope you enjoy this shot as much as I do.....

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

Our family had an awesome vacation in the Caribbean from June 26 - July 3, 2010. We sailed on Carnival's ship "Liberty" which was HUGE and included a waterslide, giant TV screen on the deck and of course the food was delicious .... and endless! I gained 4 pounds(uh oh) in 7 days... and enjoyed every bit of it, too!

Our ports of call were:
Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (shown above)
St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Grand Turk

This is a shot of Lauren (one of Anna's friends that we invited to go with us), my daughter Anna Melissa, my son Michael and my new daughter-in-law, Rebekah ♥ in Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. It's a private island for Carnival guests only. There are 30 permanent residents on the island. We took a tender from the ship to the island and had lunch catered there, as well. YES.... the water really IS that color and so clear! The sand is so soft, like talcum powder and I floated for hours that day. I miss that island very much!

This was a tiny little butterfly that I photographed this summer on an orange Butterfly Weed in one of our pastures. I loved the fringes on his wings and the striped antennae.

I wanted to dedicate this photograph to my dear friend BRANDY (bford13). Today is her BIRTHDAY! WhoooHooo! Drop by her photostream and marvel is Brandy's talent! She really has an eye for composition and does some of the best texture work on Flickr. Happy Birthday BRANDY!

I am going to take a few days off of Flickr. I've neglected most of you already and for that I am truly sorry. I need to get some things done around here at home. I will be back to visit your streams soon. Until then, have a great Friday and weekend to come!

I haven't a clue what kind of flower this is. It was growing wild on my farm. Except for the two center blooms, the rest of the cluster looks like shimmering pink tongues! Isn't nature simply amazing?

Persimmons: An Opossum's Passion

This persimmon tree grows right next to our driveway. Every year, we are visited by hungry opossums (possums) as well as birds.
(Note: Never, ever eat a green one unless you want your eyes to water and your face to pucker! LOL)

A persimmon, known to the ancient Greeks as "the fruit of the gods" is the edible fruit of a number of species of trees of the genus Diospyros in the ebony wood family (Ebenaceae). The word persimmon is derived from putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, from Powhatan, an Algonquian language (related to Blackfoot, Cree and Mohican) of the eastern United States, meaning "a dry fruit". Persimmons are generally light yellow-orange to dark red-orange in color, and depending on the species, vary in size from 1.5-9 cm (0.5-4 in) diameter, and may be spherical, acorn-, or pumpkin-shaped. The calyx often remains attached to the fruit after harvesting, but becomes easier to remove as it ripens. They are high in glucose, with a balanced protein profile, and possess various medicinal and chemical uses. While the persimmon fruit is not considered a "common berry" it is in fact a "true berry" by definition.

P.S. My laptop is still sick :-(
I'm using another computer now, so I'll be around to visit you shortly.

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday and week!

I just HAD to post this for my dear friend RON (Ragtops2000). It's amazing how brave I get when I'm behind the camera......

Good ole Toby.... he LOVES to go hiking in the woods on our farm. I think he has sniffed every inch of our farm... or at least he tries to! In case you're wondering, he's a Schnoodle... a cross between a Poodle and a Schnauzer. They call them "hybrid" dogs. Anyway, he's the smartest dog we've ever had and he has the l-o-n-g-e-s-t eyelashes I've ever seen on a dog!

All throughout our woods, there are patches of those green plants. They are some sort of ground vine and stay green all year round. Someone told us once that they were "protected" plants. Does anyone know what these plants are called?

UPDATE: A great BIG Thank You goes to my dear friend LORI (Lori-B.) who ID'd the green plants in this photograph. They are Lycopodium digitatum, commonly known as Fan Clubmoss or Southern Ground Cedar or Ground Pine. It is endangered in many states in the USA.
Hope you all have a great week!

I'm having a bit of an internet problem on my laptop tonight... so I may not get around to visiting your streams until tomorrow (Tuesday). I'm having to enter comments in 3 or 4 times to get them to "take" and at other times I'm getting the "Oops, the link seems to be broken" messages. Hopefully the problem will be resolved by the morning.

Thank you for coming by to visit. Each and everyone of you are appreciated! ♥

September Monarch

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

The Monarchs have arrived! How thrilling to see these flashes of orange among all the wildflowers.

Did you know:

The Monarch’s wingspan ranges from 8.9–10.2 cm (3½–4 in.)

The monarch is the only butterfly that migrates both north and south as the birds do on a regular basis. They follow the same migration patterns every year. During migration, huge numbers of butterflies can be seen gathered together.

Most predators have learned that the monarch butterfly makes a poisonous snack. The toxins from the monarch's milkweed diet have given the butterfly this defense. In either the caterpillar or butterfly stage the monarch needs no camouflage because it takes in toxins from the milkweed and is poisonous to predators. Many animals advertise their poisonous nature with bright colors.

Here's a link to a coloring sheet of a Monarch you can print out for your child or grandchild to color.

I hope you all enjoy a wonderful Tuesday!

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

This is my calico cat Cassie sitting on a rail on my front porch. That's her favorite place to be now as she watches the hummingbirds buzz around her... out of reach, thank goodness.

I am dedicating this photo to one of the sweetest ladies you'll ever know.... AMANDA (craftedfromtheheart). She was one of my first Flickr friends and I was drawn to her beautiful photography, her bubbly personality and her fighting spirit to face all the difficult challenges that life seems to have tossed in her direction. Despite her adversities, she keeps on going and fills our comment boxes with humor & sweet words. I admire her so much.

I chose this particular shot because Amanda loves all sorts of animals. She has possums and kookaburra that visit her daily. They know she is a gentle soul that can be trusted. How lucky they are to have Amanda looking after them.

Amanda, thank you so much for the beautiful testimony you wrote for me. You are a blessing in so many people's lives, including mine. Remember, you really ARE an angel, so stretch out those wings and keep on flying........

P.S..... If you visit Amanda's page and see her photos blacked out, fear not. She's being harassed by a coward who keeps flagging her photos. Seriously, how can a photo of a flower be considered inappropriate? It displeases me when people use Flickr resources as a weapon against other members. So sad.

Happy furry, feathery and Hairy Spider Friday to you!
Here's a little jumping spider that I photographed this summer in my garden. He was a tiny little fellow and not so scary when seen by the naked eye. But with a macro lens, he certainly looks quite menancing! I thought this was the perfect shot to upload today... Friday the 13th! Are you scared now?????

Autumn Splendour

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

I took this photo this morning........ it's a gorgeous Autumn day ! There are breezes blowing trees full of colors and pushing white clouds across the crisp, blue sky.

I used the CinemaScope process in Picnik to get the effect (above). The original photograph is below.......(second comment)

Comments are NOT necessary. I'm finding it harder and harder to find the time to get around to my contacts.

Thanks for stopping by and "looking" and I hope you all have a marvelous weekend!

Tall and Lanky Mushroom - Orange Pinwheel Marasmius

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

I found this little mushroom in the woods on our farm. I think it is amazing that the stem was soooo tall and still had the strength to hold up the cap. It was rather small, as you can tell by comparing it to the brown leaf below it. I have no idea what kind it is but I love it's scalloped edges.

Update: A huge THANK YOU to Namerifrats29 for identifying this mushroom. It is an Orange Pinwheel Marasmius Mushroom.

This will be my last post for awhile. I have been reassessing my time on Flickr. I realized that in the year I have been on here, I have spent most of my waking hours commenting, and less time taking photos. I admit that part of that is my own fault. The more I made Explore and Front page, the more people commented and the more I feel obligated to comment back.

I'll be the first to admit that I enjoyed making Explore and I miss that thrill. And now, my inability to make it at all has taken the wind out of my sail.

However, it sure is wonderful to see more exposure for thousands of deserving photographers. There are tons out there whose photography blew my doors off and they never once got a photo in Explore. They deserve to be there now. I just hope they don't get caught up in the rat race like I did.

I'm just taking a break so I can get off my duff and live life a bit more without being (literally) consumed with commenting my life away....

I love all the true friends I have made on Flickr and I will continue to stick my head in and enjoy your fabulous photography and your lives....but the days of commenting for 6-8 hours a day are over.

Love you bunches! ♥

Update: One of my contacts sent me an excerpt from a Flickr Staff Member (Zycster) who was writing about the algorithm change. He said, "So, while there is no blacklist, the algorithm does now take into account whether or not a member's photos have been in Explore."

Monday Morning Pace

Tracey Tilson Photography posted a photo:

My dear friend MARK (DoodleNPoodles) inspired the title for this photo after his comment on this same photo on my Facebook page. Thank you, Mark!

P.S.... please take the time to visit Just a Dog (One of my favorite photos by Mark). His entire photostream is full of marvelous captures!

The story behind this shot:
My calico cat (Cassie) was playing with something the other day, batting it around with her paws. I thought it was a pebble, but upon closer observation I discovered it was a snail shell. When she was through playing, I set the shell up on the cover of our hot tub and went to get my camera to get some shots of the shell. When I returned, I was surprised to see that a live snail still inhabited the shell! He was a great subject to photograph... slow and unfaltering. I nicknamed him "Frank". I tend to name everything! LOL! After his "photo shoot" I released him near our compost pile.

Note: One of my contacts thought I had used selective color for this shot. But the answer is no. The hot tub cover was gray and it had rained the night before, hence the waterdrops (and the puddle shown below). All the colors are "true".
