Dunstaffnage Castle

Dunstaffnage Castle, one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, from the rear.

The castle was built around 1220, probably by Duncan MacDougall, son of Dubhgall, Lord of Lorn, and grandson of the great Somerled ‘King of the Isles’.

Connel Bridge

Looking over Dunstaffnage Bay towards the Connel Bridge and Loch Etive while walking from Oban to Dunstaffnage.

The Connel Bridge, which spans Loch Etive at the Falls of Lora, was built in 1903.

The buildings in the bottom left are from Dunstaffnage Marine Science Centre and that'd be Dunbeg Marina in the bay.

Set in stunning surroundings at the head of Loch Etive, the Bonawe Iron Furnace, founded in 1753, was the most complete charcoal-fuelled ironworks in Britain.

The imposing bulk of Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban.

Built before 1275 on a huge rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn, Dunstaffnage was the mighty stronghold of the MacDougalls.

The castle, with its huge curtain wall, was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1309 and remained in royal possession for some years. Dunstaffnage became the temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746.

Dunstaffnage Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland. It guards the seaward approach from the Firth of Lorn to the Pass of Brander – and thereby the heart of Scotland. The castle was built around 1220, probably by Duncan MacDougall, son of Dubhgall, Lord of Lorn, and grandson of the great Somerled ‘King of the Isles’.

Dunollie Castle in Oban.

Ewan MacDougall, the third chief of the MacDougalls, probably built a castle there in the 13th century. The existing castle ruins date from the 15th century.

The Marquis of Argyll captured the castle in 1644, but it was returned to the MacDougalls in 1661. In 1746, the MacDougalls abandoned Dunollie Castle and built Dunollie House just downhill from the castle ruins.

Fingal's Dog Stone

Clach-nan-con or The Dog Stone, is on the way to Dunollie Castle, which can be seen in the background.

Celtic folk lore has it that the giant, Finn the Fingal of MacPherson, also known as Fionn Mac Cumhail or Finn McCool, used to tie his legendary dog Bran to this stone and the groove at the base is where the rope has rubbed away the stone.
