There was a huge patch of thistle in bloom at Holcim Wetlands, which attracted some insects like this skipper.

I think the Killdeer are past nesting season, but they were still pretty vocal if I got too close.

One of my favorite Colorado birds, which I see frequently, but have tried for years to get good shots. This one was singing maybe 8-10 feet away from me last night. The light was fading quickly, but I was able to use some fill flash to brighten it up a bit, without making it look like I used a flash.

I have yet to master photographing swallows in flight, so I have to take advantage of the rare times I catch them perched!

We were taking pictures of this Swainson's Hawk, when the Loggerhead Shrike decided the hawk needed to leave. It did leave shortly after this.

There weren't many odonates out at Chico Basin Ranch, but there were several of these forktails around a small marshy area.

Western Kingbird

There were a couple of pairs of these nesting and hunting around a rest area in western Kansas. Not too many trees around except for at the rest area.

There were still a handful of Snow Geese hanging out at Squaw Creek, but the half million were long gone.

I spotted the brilliant white of this Snowy Egret, which then helped me to see the less flashy Tricolored Heron wading nearby.

I saw quite a few Common Whitetails, like this male, flying around Holcim Wetlands. I even saw the Snowy Egret snap at some that flew too close.

This heron, formerly called the Louisiana Heron, is usually found in the swamps of the southeast, but does wander inland - as this one obviously did.

Summer Tanager in molt

Eric and I found this tanager along the Fountain Creek Trail north of Circle Drive in Colorado Springs. It has been identified as a molting male Summer Tanager, which is a pretty rare bird for Colorado.

Polistes metricus on a nest at Little Dixie Lake Conservation Area. You can see some eggs in a couple of the cells.
