Blooming moss, Cape Breton

Cape Breton Highlands National Park was the highlight of our Canadian vacation: we saw half a dozen moose, white-tailed deer, red foxes, countless garter snakes, bald eagles, multiple species of hawks, peregrine falcons, hummingbirds, spruce grouse, harbor seals and big pods of pilot whales! Not to mention having hours-long hikes entirely to ourselves.

Wild horses at sunrise, Assateague Island

Another shot of the horses from last summer.

The "wild" horses on Assateague are actually feral animals, meaning that they are descendants of domestic animals that have reverted to a wild state. Horses tough enough to survive the scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather and poor quality food found on this remote, windswept barrier island have formed a unique wild horse society.

Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast. While this dramatic tale of struggle and survival is popular, there are no records yet that confirm it. The most plausible explanation is that they are the descendants of horses that were brought to barrier islands like Assateague in the late 17th century by mainland owners to avoid fencing laws and taxation of livestock. Tibbetts Point Lighthouse

Tibbetts Point Lighthouse marks the point where Lake Ontario empties into the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The original was built in 1827 when Captain John Tibbetts of Troy, New York, gave three acres of land to the federal government to build a lighthouse. The present one dates back to 1854.

We stopped here before crossing into Canada through the beautiful Thousand Islands (1,864 to be exact), summer home to some of the wealthiest Canadians and New Yorkers. Among the local quirks is the shortest international bridge, connecting two small islands that together comprise a gorgeous home.

Our tent collapsed and I crashed the rental car while backing out of the camping spot in driving snow in the first week of June! But the upside was the gorgeous drive to Bozeman to get the replacement car.

Russian River, California. Driving down Highway 1 late in the afternoon is only beaten by biking down Highway 1. You want to stop at every bend, and parking and getting out begins to get annoying.

Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park

At five times the size of Central Park, Pelham Bay Park is by far the largest park in New York City with a fraction of the crowds. And Orchard Beach is a bona fide mile-long beach with tons of sand trucked in from Sandy Hook and the Rockaways!
