Crux by the Sea

After the sun sets the first stars to appear in the South hemisphere are Sirius, Canopus, Alpha and Beta Centauri and then the stars of Crux.

These bright stars can be observed and photographed while the sky is still blue and bright with the last light of dusk or the first light of dawn.

Orion and Scorpius

Scorpius follows Orion eternally across the sky so when Orion sets, Scorpius rises and for a few minutes both constellations can be seen at the same time.

Scorpius is rising on the left of this photo while Orion is setting on the right side.

Taken under an almost full moon, the seascape can be seen like a daytime scene.

Full Moon on the Belt of Venus

This photo was taken just after sunset as the full Moon was rising opposite the Sun.

The dark band above the horizon is Earth's shadow, the shadow of our own planet projected in the sky. The pink band above is the "Belt of Venus".

The Milky Way from the Bottom of the Ocean

At this location the tide is 8 meters high. The tripod is actually standing at the ocean's floor in a place that will be covered by meters of water just in a few hours.

The Magellan clouds can be seen to the left of the Milky Way. The Tarantula nebula is visible as a bright spot in the large Magellan Cloud while the cluster 47 Tucanae appears as a bright diffuse star just next to the small Magellan Cloud.

In the Milky Way the dark coalsack nebula is clearly visible.

The bright star Canopus, the 2nd brightest star in the sky, is reflected in a tidal pool.

The wet shells reflect some of the stars.

A panoramic photo taken facing the clifts of San Eduardo. The 180 degrees view makes the cliffs look like an island.

The brightest spot is the moon on the left side, Jupiter is bright on the right and if you look carefully you will see Orion rising near the horizon and the Large Magellan Cloud near the right border of the photo.

A Tale of Two Volcanos

A volcanic rock found at the beach in a cold foggy morning. The chilean volcano has been sending ashes and particles for months to the atmosphere producing interesting colors at sunrise and sunset.

This rock is not from that volcano but the colors in the horizon might be.

The last stars that are visible at dawn before being washed out by the glow in the sky at sunrise.

Five minutes after this shot no star was visible at all.

The twilight arch is visible at the horizon.

What seems to be the Sun in the photo is just a refraction, the real sun is behind the thin layer of clouds over the horizon and at this focal length is much smaller than its refraction.
