cgullz posted a photo:

Recently I read the graphic novel 'Dororo' series by Osamu Tezuka, and was totally entranced by his style. Very very cool artist, so I wanted to find out more about him and picked up Helen McCarthy's book from the local library. The man was a genius! Insightful, visionary and incredibly hard working, it is easy to see why he has been described as 'The God of Manga' and 'The Father of Anime'. Reading his work [in English, but from right to left like Japanese format], was exactly like reading a movie in images. The flow was amazing and the use of different perspectives totally enticing to the mind and eye. It is truly a shame that he passed away at really, a young age, only 60! Osamu Tezuka died, from stomach cancer, on this day the 9th of February, in 1989.

Osamu Tezuka placed his own character, at times, into his comic strips. He was almost always wearing a hat - beret. I have placed a quote in the balloon, after removing the original script, the quote is something that Osamu lived by and can be found on a statue of one of his most well known creations - Astro Boy - which stands outside his Elementary School, in Japan. He had a deep attachment to nature, and a deep dislike for war after living through, and seeing the effects of WWII as a teen. He trained and qualified as a doctor, but admirably followed his dream - as an artist, and had an incredible career.
His story and style made such a profound impact on me I wanted to make a tribute, this anniversary being the most proximate. Incedentally, in reading Helen McCarthy's book I found out the Dororo series i read was penned in 1968/9. Timeless. I am looking forward to reading his Buddha series next ...

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Posted as the second of a mini-series of pix for ANZAC day, 25 April .. and primarily as an awareness and information post. I can't really apologise for re-writing the information as one cohesive piece, I am simply not informed nor well read enough to do so.

New Zealand's first day of rememberance was on the 25 April 1916, one year after the landing of New Zealanders at Gallipoli. While Gallipoli was our first war experience, 84 per cent of New Zealand's total war casualities occured on the Western Front. ...

More than 102,000 Kiwi men served during WWI - more than 10% of the total population at the time, and 20% of all eligible manpower (Harper: 2008). The loss: some 18,500 New Zealanders dead, and some 40,000 wounded (over 50% casualty rate). New Zealanders served mainly in the capacity of infantry, however, there were some that served in the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Navy and Royal Navy Air Services. Also, in New Zealands very small naval force and local forces / training etc (Wright: 2004). New Zealand casualty rates, were close to, if not the highest of any of the Allied forces, on a per captia basis.
