A detail shot of Awosting Falls with ice clinging to the rock strata in the background.

As the temps began to creep toward 40 many icicles broke loose, including particularly large one that was causing a bit of a shadow problem.

Split Rock

The classic shot of Split Rock at the Mohonk Preserve.

The name for this spot is pretty obvious: the rocks split at this point as the Coxing KIlls tumbles down a small waterfall and through this natural tunnel.

The natural beauty and easy access make this a popular swimming and sunbathing destination in summer.

(The placement of the educational kiosk was not done with photographers in mind.)

Kaaterskill Falls

Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskill Mountains is a two-tiered waterfall with a total drop of 260 feet.

It is a very popular destination due to its height, dramatic double tier, and relatively short hiking distances from the parking area. Unfortunately that popularity comes with tragedy as there seems to be at least one death at the falls each year.

New Croton Dam

The New Croton Dam in Cortlandt, NY. This dam on the Croton River has created the New Croton Reservoir, part of NYC's water supply.

The dam is part natural (the left), part artificial, and too far from home to become a regular shooting location.

Awosting Falls is a 60' waterfall in Minnewaska State Preserve, fed by the Peter's Kill.

This waterfall is quite close to home on a short trail, so I get here quite often. There is plenty to work with down in this area.

I would have liked to have crossed the stream to shoot this from a more direct angle, but the water was running too high.
