A convoy of five stripper harvesters and 10 strippers make short work of 5500 acres of wheat grown on the property of Messrs Mack and Austin. On the right can be seen a genuine one-horse-power tread winnower beside grain bags awaiting transport. The railhead at Narromine shipped as many as 103 waggon loads of grain in a day during the harvest.

Vaniman struggled to find a suitable elevated viewpoint to record the city and began experimenting with a balloon imported from America in October 1903. He had to wait until a clear day without factory smoke and no wind. The balloon was tethered 180 metres above Dr John Hay's house at 'the Crow's Nest' [North Sydney].

Vaniman's antics to take this photograph were described in the Blue Mountains Gazette 27 November 1903:

A man at the top of an eighty-foot pole attracted a deal of attention in the Katoomba Park on Wednesday […as he] coolly handled a photographic camera with which he took several pictures.

Notes: The Royal Arcade ran from George Street near the markets, through to Pitt Street, near the School of Arts. Over 90 metres long, it was well lit, with a lofty celestory and gas lamps. There were 31 shops on the ground floor, 36 offices on the first floor and a photographic studio above them at the George Street end. Of Sydney’s five Victorian arcades, only the Strand survived twentieth century development, the Royal disappearing beneath the Hilton Hotel in the mid 1970s.
