Taken in downtown Waukesha, WI. Lots of interesting architecture and old mural advertisements on buildings. Loved the light here.

Experimenting with a couple of techniques I haven't used much, Saturation masks and Luminosity masks.

Luminosity Masks: bit.ly/73iSPz

A liquor store in a neighborhood I used to work in. I've just always liked the sign for whatever reason. To me, it doesn't look like it would be out of place in a picture from the '60's. Kind of what I went for with the processing. Started with 5 exposures 1 stop apart, merged to HDR in Photomatix and then edited in Photoshop and finished up with the split toning and vignette and cropped in Lightroom.

Zipps Before And After ©2011 J. Glaser

bluebucket posted a photo:

Check out the final version of this picture in my stream.

Technical details:
Started with 5 shots 1 stop apart. Imported to Lightroom. Opened in Photoshop.

Duplicated background layer and cloned out street light, trees and wires.

Duplicated Blue Channel and used to make an edge mask. Loaded channel as a selection.

Duplicated clone layer and changed blend mode to Luminosity. Sharpened using Smart Sharpen.

Added a new layer above that, changed blend mode to Soft Light. Set foreground color to black. Filled with a black to transparent gradient from the top of the image down (while holding the shift key to ensure a straight line gradient). This basically simulates a neutral density filter. Adjust opacity as needed.

Created two new layers above that. One filled with white blend mode set to Color Burn, and one filled with black blend mode set to Color Dodge. Painted with a soft black brush set at around 5% opacity on the white layer on areas I wanted to burn. Painted with same brush but white on the black layer on areas I wanted to dodge.

Above this added three Hue/Saturation adjustment layers. One for the reds, one for the cyans/blues and one for the yellows. I did it this way so I had more control over the overall effect of the specific color changes.

That's it, any questions or comments please feel free to comment. Check out the finished version of this in my photostream.

Glaser" />

Much like the shot I want of this amazing little bit of architecture. For those of you with an eye for it, yes, it is a Gehry building. It's the Weisman Art Museum located on the east bank of the MIssissippi River on the University of Minnesota campus. I've been shooting this building for five years now, off and on, and this is the first thing that I've thought was decent enough to share. I'm still not happy with it altogether, but it's much better than previous efforts.

Technical details: Nine shots, 1/3 stop apart, merged with Photomatix. Imported into Lightroom and edited with Photoshop. Color tweaks, contrast and sharpening. Used an edge mask and a duplicate layer set to Luminosity for sharpening. Saved back into LR. Pushed color a little bit more and added a strong contrast curve. Bumped clarity slider a little and added vignette.

Lucked out to be visiting Milwaukee and have all my gear in the car when I heard there was heavy late afternoon/early evening fog on the lakefront. Shot at the McKinley Park Marina.

Down & Dirty:

Five exposures, one stop apart blended together in Photomatix, saved as a .TIFF and imported into Lightroom. Edited a copy in Photoshop. Set B&W points. Added a black layer (blend mode: color burn) and white layer (blend mode: color dodge) and painted in white on the Color Burn layer to bring out saturation/shadows and white on the Color Dodge layer to bring out highlights. Duplicated the background layer and made a Levels Adjustment layer and pushed the white output to enhance the fog/mist. Masked out areas that didn't have fog or look good with it. Duplicated background layer and changed to Luminosity blend mode and sharpened using an edge mask and USM. Backed off opacity and brought it back up 10% at a time until it looked good to me. Converted to B&W with Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer, saved back into LR, applied a strong contrast curve, bumped the Clarity slider applied the split toning effect and added the vignetting.

Taken 5/17/2011 at the statue of Harmon Killebrew outside Target Field after news of his passing. One of the all time greats and more importantly, by all accounts I've heard, a good person. I'm not a big Twins fan, I love the game of baseball though and was saddened as a lot of people were to hear of his death.

OK. for the down and dirty about the photo. I shot five exposures each one stop apart as the light was kind of tricky. Merged to HDR in Photomatix, imported .TIFF into LIghtroom, edited in Photoshop. Adjusted for color, set white/black points. Added slight S curves adjustment. Faked DOF, Selective color treatment and sharpened using edge mask on layer set to luminosity. Saved back to LR, added a little bump in the Clarity slider and some vignetteing. Cropped slightly.

AWWTS Before And After

bluebucket posted a photo:

©2011 All Rights Reserved

Ok, steps to get from before, to after:

Imported into Lightroom
Edit copy in Photoshop
Duplicate background

Duplicate again. Set mode to Luminosity, rename Sharpen, turn off visibility

Create two new layers above, Fill 1st with white and set blend mode to Color Burn. Rename Shadow. Fill 2nd with black and set blend mode to Color Dodge. Rename Highlight.

Select Shadow layer. Set foreground color to black. Pick brush tool and select a round brush with a hardness of 0%. Set brush opacity low. Around 5% or so. No hard or fast rule here, but the idea is to build the effect. Paint with this brush on the areas of the picture you want a more saturated look. If you build up too much effect, you can switch your foreground color to white and paint over an area to dial it back.
**On this image, I actually used two "Shadows" layers. One filled completely with black and set to 2% opacity to boost an overall flat image, and then the normal one filled with white (both set to color burn) and painted in black to bring out certain areas even more.**

Select Highlight layer. Switch foreground color to white and paint over areas you want to boost the highlights on.

Go back to the Sharpen layer. Turn visibility on and run USM. Settings I used are:
AMOUNT: 500%
RADIUS: 2.5
THRESHOLD: 2

**Note on sharpening. I recommend tailoring the sharpening technique to your image type. For example, an edge mask is good for say, a photo of architecture or one with a lot of edges and lines. For this photo, that would not really be a good choice. If you're not sure, try a couple different techniques and see which you like best. **

Image will not look good at this point but, set opacity to 0 and slowly bring it back until you are satisfied with the look. In this image, I used a layer mask as well and painted out areas like the clouds that didn't need sharpening.

I also added a curves adjustment layer in conjunction with a threshold adjustment layer to find the black and white points of the image. I also applied a slight "S" curve to bump contrast. I then saved, went back into Lightroom, applied a strong contrast curve adjustment, tweaked the saturation a little bit and added a little bit of the Clarity slider.

Hope this is helpful. Any questions about how I did this, feel free to ask in comments and I will answer. Cheers!
