A few minutes after taking this picture at Fort Wadworth, Staten Island, my friend and I were detained and charged with trespassing. We saw signs which mentioned a bird nesting area, and went no farther than those signs. We were at least 200 feet from signs farther away which read 'Area Closed'.

Fort Wadsworth is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, run by the National Park Service ... and secured by sketchy policy. I've never had problems at the other locations of Gateway (Fort Hancock, Fort Tilden, Floyd Bennet Field, nor Fort Tilden either), but this was an entirely different experience.

Two other tourists were taken into custody for being on the other side of the fort, while my friend and I walked away with $275 fines (and I think misdemeanor charges) each.

National Park Police, thank you for making my visit to my park such an abhorrent experience.

(To anyone looking at this on a map, we approached along the shoreline from Cliff Street, and stopped when we saw the signs outside of the fort)

Until yesterday, I had no idea that a colony of seals lived in New York City (during the winter). Out at Swinburne Island, there are 3 or 4 dozen harbor and grey seals relaxing on the rocks and in the water around the old quarantine island. They didn't come too close, but certainly wanted to know what we were up to.

Last night, my accumulated Flickr picture views peaked over 1 million!

Now, I realize that this is something a decent kitten or pratfall/nut-shot video can accomplish in only a few weeks on YuToob, but still I'm pretty proud (and humbled) that people are so interested in my amateur photography.

Since I started taking pictures (for more than candid keepsakes), I've upgraded cameras, lenses, bags, backpacks, software, and all types of accessories. More than that, I've learned SO much, and developed my style, method, and technique ... mixing them into ME. MY shots.

I like 'em, and I'm glad that you do too.

Josephine Shaw Lowell Memorial Fountain in Bryant Park. Shot during Leica's generous loaning out of their X1 cameras. The event was hosted by the cool dudes at B&H Eventspace.

The B&H rep standing nearby looked on with a raised eyebrow as I rubber-banded my ND512 (9-stop) filter onto the Leica camera. Hey ... no threads on the lens, so I had to improvise.

42nd Street & Bryant Park, shot during Leica's generous loaning out of their X1 cameras. The event was hosted by the cool dudes at B&H Eventspace.

This is a one-shot HDR, converted to B&W with Nik Silver Efex. The flares are real, as I dug out an old 4-star cross screen filter and held it on front of the camera.
