Re-Roofing

The big recent local transit news was that a portion of the first phase of the Expo Line light rail project was put into public operation, from downtown L.A. to the station at La Cienega Blvd. Free rides were offered to the public on April 28 and 29, 2012. I missed the rides and the opening festivities and most significantly, any special commemorative tchotchkes that may have been distributed.

Unremarked was the apparent commencement of refurbishment work on the old Southern Pacific / Pacific Electric Lankershim / North Hollywood station building, adjacent to LA MTA's Orange Line Busway terminus. Here we see a crew at work on the building's roof, in this early environmental cleanup stage of the project.

The Tarp is Off the Roof

The North Hollywood Patch reported in March (2012) that restoration work on the old Southern Pacific Lankershim station building was finally scheduled to begin, with work supposed to start on March 16. That date came and went without anything seeming to take place at the site, but I did see a group of guys in hard hats walking around the building one day in the following week. For most of the time since then, it looked like nothing was going on there, but then sandbags and machinery started showing up in the small gated area just east of the station, and this week, on May 2, 2012, I noticed that the tarpaulin that for years had covered the roof was gone, and a work crew was onsite.

The good folks at Iliad Books in North Hollywood graciously allowed me to photograph sections of the 1932-published U.S. Geological Survey Burbank Quadrangle topographic map that they have under glass at their cashier desk. Here's a close-up of the Lankershim/Vineland/Chandler triangle area of North Hollywood, showing the then-extant Pacific Electric line running up Vineland Avenue and curving to join the Southern Pacific Burbank Branch line running along Chandler Blvd, here labeled "Sherman Way." "Fourth St" is today's Magnolia Blvd, and "Central Ave" is what we know now as Burbank Blvd.

This was way before there was a 170 Freeway and even before, apparently, there was a North Hollywood High School at Colfax and Magnolia.

Iliad had stood for many years on Vineland Avenue just north of its northern intersection with Lankershim Blvd at Camarillo Street (Vineland and Lankershim intersect again in the hilly terrain south of Ventura Blvd), right next to Odyssey Video. It relocated a while back to the northeast corner of Cahuenga and Chandler (unfortunately not seen on this photographed portion of the map); thus it went from alongside the former Pacific Electric right-of-way to alongside the former Southern Pacific right-of-way. Part of the mural that had adorned it at the Vineland Avenue location is still (2011) visible on some of the storefonts there.

The Weddington Building

Lau's Coffee Shop, at the corner of Lankershim and Chandler Blvds in the heart of North Hollywood, California. The Hendrick's Builder's Supply building, formerly the Southern Pacific and Pacific Electric station, is visible to the right.

Scenes for the "Mr. Magic" episode of the Amazing Stories TV series, with guest star Sid Caesar, were filmed at Lau's.

The building was demolished for construction of the Red Line Subway to North Hollywood. Years after the subway's completion, this building site remains a vacant lot.

Team Track Trams

Next to Terry Lumber, no less. Tram cars for the Universal Studios Tour, a few miles to the south on Lankershim Blvd, sit on flatcars delivered by the Van Nuys Local on the Southern Pacific Burbank Branch at North Hollywood, California.

These appear to be of the same generation of trams portrayed in a billboard I saw later on, that can be seen here.

Lankershim / North Hollywood Station

Former Southern Pacific and Pacific Electric station in North Hollywood, California, when tracks were still in place and freight trains still visited.

Trains were discontinued, the rails were pulled up, and the builders supply company vacated, but the building is still there. This location is now the eastern end of the Los Angeles MTA's Orange Line Busway, with much of the foreground area paved as a loop where buses lay over and turn around. The building is behind a fence, its roof covered with a tarp, awaiting rumored restoration efforts. The Builders Supply signage has been removed, and the chimney is gone; I think it came apart during the Northridge Quake in 1994.

The surrounding area is slated for massive redevelopment, adjacent as it is to the North Hollywood Red Line subway station, which is across a busy street to the east of this building (to the left in this picture).

Southern Pacific's Van Nuys Local crosses Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood, California. A sign of things to come literally stands on the left, portending the eventual building of the Red Line Metro Rail Subway to North Hollywood. The subway station actually ended up on the other side of the street. November, 1984.

Richard Fellows' personal trolley car, a former Pacific Electric vehicle reconstructed and retooled with a gasoline engine, rubber tires, and other modifications needed to make it driveable on public roadways. It's on hand here for the opening day festivities for the first segment of the Los Angeles MTA Red Line subway.

I asked the guys minding the car if it had been used in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and they said "No, that was a 'Hollywood' car," referring to the vehicle seen prominently in the film, numbered variously 721 and 717, that was fabricated by Dean Jeffries Automotive Styling and modelled after the PE's 700-class of cars, heavily used on the Hollywood lines. But it turns out the 1058 is seen in at least one scene early in the film: in the long take where Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant dismounts from the unprototypic lip protruding from the end of the 721 and thanks the ride-hitching kids for cigarettes, we can see another Red Car passing on an intersecting street in the background. That was the 1058.

That scene was filmed on South Hope Street north of 12th, not very far from the location shown here.

Another film appearance by the car is in the great 1976 movie Bound for Glory, starring David Carradine as Woody Guthrie, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn of others.

Following Mr. Fellows' death, this vehicle has been reconfigured to run once again on rails and under wire, which it now does on the Port of Los Angeles Waterfront Red Car Line in San Pedro, California. A nice summary by Chris Guenzler of that operation and how the 1058 ended up there may be read here.

This one celebrates Nudie Cohn, proprietor of "Nudie's Rodeo Tailors," formerly located at 5015 Lankershim Blvd, and the Lankershim / North Hollywood Southern Pacific / Pacific Electric Station in its incarnation as Hendricks Builders Supply.
