Smoke Art - Scream From The Mist

Photographing smoke art is one of the most rewarding aspects of home photography. We've all seen the wispy strands that float and glide through the air, but it's not until these trails are frozen in time do we see the true beauty and elegance of their construction.

In many images it's possible to see a subject within the smoke.

The advantage of smoke art photography is that - compared to water droplets - the patterns take longer to form so it's easier to judge when to take the shot. It's when the scene is viewed on the screen that the true diversity and uniqueness of the patterns is realised.

This was processed in Photoshop to highlight the patterns that exist within the formations.

The smoke was created by burning an incense stick against a black background. The light was a flashgun behind and below at an angle of 45° upwards with black card between the flash unit and the subject so that the light hit the smoke, but not the camera lens. The result was processed in Photoshop.

This is the last set of smoke art to be produced using this method. With so many uploads, it's difficult to create original ideas. So now I will be concentrating on a different and more creative method which I plan to have ready within a few months.

Smoke Art Setup

The setup for my smoke art is as follows:

At the back, a large sheet of black card attached to the wall.

Forward is the flashgun at 45º mounted on a stand above a remote trigger sensor.

The main part is the incense stick, elevated above the surface with an A4 sheet of black card to prevent the light from the flash reaching the lens.

The camera is mounted on a tripod and is set level with the incense stick at the bottom of the viewfinder so that about 15-18cm of rising smoke is visible.

The camera has a remote trigger to send a signal to the sensor attached to the flash so it fires wirelessly.

It's important to have the camera level with the path of the smoke, for which I use a spirit level attached to the onboard camera flash mount.

From the left:

A remote trigger sensor that sits between a stand and the flashgun. This receives a signal from the sender unit when the camera is fired and activates the flash.

Next is the sending unit that transmits a signal to the receiving unit when the camera is fired.

A spirit level that attaches to the camera flash mount (hot shoe) and is used to level the camera.

Next is a trigger unit attached to the camera to fire the shutter and flash. I usually use Blu-Tack to stick this to the desk so I can use one finger to fire the camera, rather than having to hold the remote.

All these are freely available on eBay.

Olympic Torch Relay

On Sunday 8 July 2012 the Olympic torch relay passed through Welwyn Garden City.

The original intention was to get the runner with the fountain in background.

It was a job to capture this as the crowd surged into the road and the runner is left handed so some photos had his face obscured.

The only solution was to hold the camera high (it's good I'm tall) and set it to rapid fire.

Lighting Of The Diamond Jubilee Torches

Tonight, Welwyn Garden City celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II by lighting two torches at the Campus West complex.

There were about 200 attendees and as the torches were lit we all broke out into a rendition of the National Anthem followed by a round of applause and three 'Hip-Hip Hoorays'.

This photo was used in our local paper.

Chelsea FC Champions League & FA Cup Winners Parade 2012

The parade to mark Chelsea FC winning the Champions League and FA Cup in one season.

Chelsea beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw including extra time.

The only downside was the bus carrying the team was overcrowded with non players so it was hard to see the team or the trophies.
