My daughters and I took a little road trip yesterday. Here we are taking shots of an alligator in a canal at Lake Waccamaw, NC. The water was green with algae.

Elwell Ferry - two cars maximum

This little ferry crosses the Cape Fear River a few miles south of Elizabethtown, NC. It has operated in this location since 1905. The wooden boat was replaced by the current steel boat in 1967.

When we visited there yesterday it was not in operation because the river level was too high. I want to ride this thing, so I'll have to go another day.

The inland cable ferries located in North Carolina are operated by regional DOT divisional offices rather than the North Carolina Department of Transportation Ferry Division, with the Elwell Ferry operated by private contract[4] with DOT Division 6.[6] There are no plans to replace the Elwell Ferry with a bridge,[3] which would likely cost more than the service for the secondary road would justify."

Look at the large size to see the different keyboard layout, The drum containing the type face could be changed out for different fonts.

We were surprised to find this little building had central heat and air conditioning. The curator said local schools use this sometimes as part of field trips to show kids what it was like "back then". I think they somehow missed the point.

Very energy efficient: simply push & pull the handle to operate the agitator inside. The flywheel on top spins to help keep it going.

North Carolina beaches are made of sand. There are no rocks, boulders or anything else: only sand. The state and local governments spend a lot of time and resources trying to counteract beach erosion.

Carolina Beach has just spent much time and money to replenish the beach at Freeman Park. As you can see the ocean is undoing all that work.

It is a window made with slices of rock. I didn't use a flash ... The colors are from the light shining through.

I used to know what kind of rocks these are but my brain cells are old and getting fewer all the time. Maybe someone out there can tell me what they are.

Joel guessed it. It's a grass cutter. When pushed along the ground the bottom wheels turn the meshed wheels on top that cut the grass.

Blackened catfish, on mashed potatoes, smothered with crawfish etouffee and toast. It was absolutely delicious.

This restaurant is in the building I labeled earlier as the "Bad Luck Corner" ( www.flickr.com/photos/doc-adams/8513273059/ ). They were busy during lunch and the food is very good at a reasonable price.

I think they will be successful.

Price's Creek Lighthouse - circa 1849 (WARNING: Historical content)

During the mid 1800's eight lighthouses were built along the Cape Fear River from Fort Fisher to Wilmington. These were "range" lights to aid in the navigation within the shipping channel of the river. The lighthouses were in pairs with one shorter than the other. If you were in the channel you would see two lights line up vertically. If they were not lined up you would have to steer right or left to center them.

This is important, because the natural depth of the Cape Fear River is surprisingly shallow and it's very easy to run aground. Years ago I had a sailboat that only had a two foot draft. I ran it aground many times in the river.

As the Confederates retreated from Fort Fisher in 1865, they destroyed seven of the eight lighthouses to foil the Union Navy. This one escaped destruction.

It is on private property near the ferry docks at Southport. There is no way to get to it by land. The best view of the remains are from the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry.
