Lt. Gen. Kenneth J. Glueck, III Marine Expeditionary Force commanding general and Task Force 505 commander, watches Marines and sailors sort through he wreckage of homes and buildings during a clean-up operation here April 3. Glueck traveled to the island of Oshima, one of the hardest hit areas of Japan, to see Marines and sailors from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, III MEF, who have been aiding local government authorities and personnel in a clean-up operation of the area.

Christopher Oliveri, right, shake hands with Japanese civilians March 25 service members with United States Forces Japan (Forward) and Japanese North East Army delivered 500 hygiene sets, toys, and clothes to the Okuma Elementary School for internally displaced personnel. The donations were provided by Samaritan’s Purse. Barajasmora is a platoon sergeant and Oliveri is a motor transportation operator with Task Force Fuji.

Service members with U.S. Forces Japan (Fwd) and Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces surveyed the school and made plans to establish power, food, and water supply lines. The school is being utilized as an internally displaced persons camp for residents affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck mainland Japan March 11, causing widespread damage. As part of Operation Tomodachi, U.S. Forces Japan stands ready to support our Japanese partners and to provide assistance when called upon.

Boyce Gire, a medical planner with the humanitarian assistance survey team, III Marine Expeditionary Force (Fwd) hands candy to Japanese children during a survey of the Tagajo City Cultural Center March 21. The Cultural Center is being utilized as an internally displaced persons camp for residents affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck mainland Japan March 11, causing widespread damage. As part of Operation Tomodachi, the HAST stands ready to support our Japanese partners and to provide assistance when called upon.

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan is briefed about the state of Ishanomaki High School by Japanese Ground Self Defense Force Lt. Gen. Yuji Kuno, the Comander of the 6th Division, JGSDF, at Ishanomaki City's high school, April 10. Kan visited the school and took time to shake hands and voice his appreciation of the U.S.'s support in the wake of the level 9.1 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami, March 11.

CAT assesses for radiation exposure [Image 3 of 9]

Senior Airman Daniel Burdick, 18th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, scans with AMD 300 a radiation survey meter on Staff Sgt. Aaron Wermy, 374 Aircraft Maintenance Squadron here March 21. The ADM 300 is used to scan aircraft and personnel for possible presence of radiation exposure. Airman Burdick is one of two man team part of a Contamination Avoidance Team designed to check on aircraft, vehicles, and personnel during post-mission assessment for radiation exposure. The CAT sits in 24 hours stand by until the emergency operation center contacts them when an aircrafts lands. The CAT typically scans 40 to 50 aircrafts and their crew here at Yokota on a daily basis.
