Love Locks Spills Over

Love Locks or Locks of Love. These are to be found attched to a bridge crossing the leat that feeds the water wheel. These locks are starting to appear all over the world in places where lovers visit.

For those that dont know a Leat (or Leet) is a chanel especially cut to take water away from a river and past a water wheel. Often a weir is built across the river to force the water down the leat.

This autumn the Czech Republic commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the Velvet Revolution – an important milestone in the history of the Czech Republic as the long era of Communist rule was brought to an end to be replaced by democracy.

The British Embassy in Prague is contributing to the commemoration in two ways. Firstly, via a collection of photographs, personal accounts and press cuttings from British staff, who worked at the Embassy in the 70s and 80s. And secondly through our contribution and support to a major open air exhibition in Prague organised by Post Bellum, an NGO which seeks to preserve the memory, experience and lessons from Czechoslovakia's Communist era.

Church of Our Lady Before Tyn

This church is said to be the inspiration for the Walt Disney Castle. I also do not understand, even centuries ago, why the building in front where allowed to be built. The roof structures actually connect to the church all the way round.

The Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, or Tyn Church, (Týnský Chrám) dominates one side of the Old Town Square. The two spires of this powerful looking Gothic church (with a Baroque interior) can be seen from all over Prague.
Tyn Church was founded in 1385, a tumultuous period when Hussites were being slaughtered by the ruling Roman Catholics. Indeed, in time Catholic Jesuits took over the church, recasting the bell and replacing the Hussites symbolic chalice with a large figure of Mary nailed between the towers.

Tyn Church is impressive by day, striking by night, lit up against the dark night sky. Take a close look at the two spires. They are not symmetrical. This is characteristic of the Gothic architecture of the time and is a representation of both the masculine and feminine sides of the world.

In Lesser Town the roads are very steep, walking up this hill after a few beers could be fun. What was very interesting was the use of gas lamps, fantasic shades with this type of street lighting.

The Old Town Hall Tower, built in 1338, is one of the most striking buildings in Prague. Inside is a staircase and an elevator. For a fee, visitors can climb or ride to the top to experience terrific views over the Old Town Square and the rest of the Old Town.

In 1364 the Old Town Hall Tower was joined to a private house adjoining it, which in turn was knocked into other houses beside that. This amalgamation of buildings became known as the Old Town Hall.

Extensive renovation in 1470 further integrated the various houses of the Old Town Hall, and refurbished the whole in the Gothic style.

Today the Old Town Hall hosts civic ceremonies in its many rooms, and also houses the primary Prague Tourist Information Centre.

Memorial to the victims of Communism II

The Memorial to the victims of Communism (Czech: Pomník obětem komunismu) is a series of statues in Prague commemorating the victims of the Communist era between 1948-1989. It is located at the base of Petřín hill, Újezd street in the Malá Strana or the Lesser Town area.

National Theatre

The National Theatre in Prague is a stunning neo-renaissance building, constructed between 1868-81. It sits proudly alongside the banks of the Vltava River.

For Czech people, the National Theatre is one of the most important cultural institutions in Prague. Since its inception the theatre has played an important role in the development of the Czech language, Czech music and the dramatic arts. This rich artistic tradition continues with a fine repertoire of opera and ballet, plus Czech drama and advent concerts.

The Supplicant of Prague

During a trip to Prague it was impossible not to notice the many beggars on the streets and bridges, anywhere that they could get noticed. I christened them supplicants because of the way they prostrate themselves when asking for money. I don't know if is through embarrassment or the eastern European way of begging. Its not comfortable whatever being stuck on your elbows and knees for hours on end, and when I say hours I mean some of these guys stay like that for 5 hours and only move when money is placed in their cup. The supplicant then nods up and down vigorously saying what I can only assume is thank you.
