Something a little different for me.

We had a part flown in for our sulphuric acid plant over the weekend... a big part that is. This is a massive Russian Ilyushin I1-76 and it was a bit of a struggle landing this bad boy on our little runway in Mount Isa. They actually had to unload the cargo so it could take off again. I was perched right at the end of the runway and I can assure you, it's LOUD. Apparently this is one of the largest transport planes in the world.

We've had some pretty wild storms come through in the last couple of weeks but mostly in the afternoon while it's still light. This one came through a couple of weekends ago around 1am and the brightness of the lightning actually woke me up.

So I got out of bed and drove about 30kms out of town to get ahead of it and managed to nab this.

This is actually a composite of 2 shots as the storm moved across the hills in the background.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

No walls, no door, no electricity, no plumbing. But a sweet ass couch!

This is the sort of random stuff you come across out here. The nearest anything to this little setup is 200km away. Made Nugget and I laugh so we thought we'd better pull up and get a couple of shots of us house sitting. That's me on the toilet and Nugget in the couch watching TV.

Last time I travelled through this area (basically the middle of nowhere) there was nothing but sand, bull dust and a bit of salt bush. The area has had a huge amount of rain recently and everything is thriving. This storm developed throughout the day and hit on Friday night. We were flooded in for 5 days after it... what a shame :)

Talking with some of the locals in the areas we passed through, the desert hasn't looked like this for 25 years. So it was a pretty special experience getting to see it the way it is. I'll be dining on the memories of this last week for quite a while.

This was a 15sec exposure with a B+W 10 stop ND filter attached. I've only just starting using this filter but so far I'm really enjoying the output.

THIS is why I love living in the bush.

I just had an amazing weekend at the Birdsville Races in the middle of the Simpson Desert in outback Aus.

The heavens opened up a can of whoop ass on us on Friday and a massive storm hit. Flooding some 4,000 people into Birdsville which consists of a pub, a roadhouse and a pie shop.

Honestly though, it's some of the best fun I've had in a very long time. Everybody there just took the typical Aussie larakin "Shit happens" attitude and the whole town turned into an enormous party.

I've got some sort of compounded hangover after 5 days of drinking but I'm still stoked. Great times.

This shot was taken on the road somewhere between Bedourie and Birdsville. Smack bang in the middle of the desert. Gorgeous sunset.

One of the first shots with the new 5D Mark II and 24-70mm f/2.8. Straight out of camera with a slight crop at the bottom. Nothing amazing but I haven't posted anything for ages so I thought I should put something up. I'll get a few more up over time.

So far I'm stoked.

Went out tonight for some sunset shots at one of my favourite locations. The plan was to use the flash triggers and umbrellas etc to light up the foreground of a mossy rock with the sunset in the background.

HOWEVER, I left the transmitter at home so I couldn't do what I wanted. I'm a bit over the stock standard sunset shot so I didn't bother setting up with the wide angle lens. This was a blessing in disguise in the end I suppose.

Instead I was kind of forced to try something different. So I got the telephoto out and trondled around searching for interesting subjects. This bindie flower was a great subject but it was bloody windy so it was difficult to get a sharp shot.

I like the negative space to the left of the frame - helps draw you into the sun... well me anyhow.

Enjoy - I'll try to catch up with your streams shortly. For now it's sleep.

Taken at Lake Moondarra this afternoon. Was a really nice evening so I thought I'd take advantage of it. Had to be on my toes a bit though as there was a few fresh water croc's hanging about... not that they're very agressive but the whole biting thing doesn't appeal to me.

8 shot HDR processed in Photomatix. This is about as far as I like to go with HDR - I think it gets a bit much and looks too over processed if you go much harder.

Angkor Wat is a beautiful place, was nice to sneak in a shot without too many tourists in it.
