Sunset - Red River National Wildlife Reserve

The Red River National Wildlife Reserve in Bossier City, LA is a wonderful preserved area for bird watching. This is an Ox Bow lake off the Red River. After a short (1/2 mile) hike there is a nice viewing spot with a bench and a clear view of the lake. Great for Sunsets. The Reserve has a visitors center with a shop and meeting area. Recently the state Birding association had its meeting here.

The Light Breaks Through

Finally by late morning the light began to break through the clouds. I love how there are islands of light in the canyon. The light continued to improve during the day but it clouded up again at sunset.

At a Meeting (Basic Science of Health Disparities) in San Diego. Last night ate a wonderful restaurant on the Harbor in Seaport Village - Sally's. What a wonderful way to end the day eating on the Harbor on the patio. Very peaceful and relaxing.

We spent our 40th anniversary celebration in Dallas at a wonderful hotel - the Intercontinental - in Los Colinas. One of the stunning pieces of art there are the Mustangs. They are wonderful bronze statues of a herd of Wild Mustangs crossing a river. Best viewed large on black.

Steam boat Natchez on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. Notice how low the river is, the boat normally is even with the dock. Odd for the river to be the low so soon in the summer. Must be a small snow run off in the mountains and not a lot of rain yet.
The 5N autobrackets only .3 or .7 exposures. Hopefully they will have a firm ware upgrade to change that. To get a -2/0/+2 you shoot in aperture priority and then adjust manually the exposure +2 and -2. You can go form -3 to +3 in 1/3 increments if you want to. Not hard at all to do. StuckInCustums, Trey Ratcliff, explains on his You Tube site with the Sony Nex 7. The 5N is the same. It does do a DRO of up to a 6 exposure bracketing but only puts out the merged image and the central image to compare. This is good if you do not want to process in Photomatix Pro or whatever you use, but go straight to Photoshop.

Another shot at the Red River National Wildlife Reserve - the last one before I packed it up and headed to the car. Last Light of the day. I love how the water turned to Blue from red as the sky color changed.

On our second day the bad light continued for sunrise. This was my first shot of the day. This is the rim trail and a view of the canyon wall. As you can tell it is cold, 25 for a high and -2 for low. The day got better though as the sun broke through.

One of the things that is unique are the shop signs. Each store has a unique sign, hand-crafted hanging from the eaves of the building. Aren't these much better that a neon sign!

San Diego Bay at Night

Took this one last year on a trip to San Diego. Shot from my hotel room (Manchester Grand Hyatt) which has a great view of the bay. The ship is the aircraft carrier "Midway" that is now a floating naval museum with a huge collection of naval aircraft on its top deck.

While I was at the Cafe Du Monde at Jackson Square in New Orleans recently, I noticed this wonderful Mural painted on the levee wall and the statues in front. Extremely colorful. Took a quick shot while enjoying my cafe-au-lait laced with chicory - a New Orleans must do if you are there. Processed using single shot raw in PhotoMatix Pro and Adobe CS6 with Topaz.

"Calm Day" at the Beach

Don't you wish you were here in the chair? Our first full day at the beach was very calm. The kids could play in the water and you could see all the little fish nibbling at our toes. You can see why they call this the emerald shore! The Destin area has the whitest sand too.

Well I liked the Sony Nex 5N so much, I splurged and got the Nex 7 as well. LOVE IT! What a fun camera to shoot. I had a research meeting at the International Hotel at Ohare and took these on the grounds of the hotel.

When I was shooting these, I loved how as I changed the angle with the sun, the light really changed how the mustangs looked. You can also see in this shot that this is actually a fountain. There are water sprays placed at the feet to make it look as if they are splashing across the spring.

The Natchez cruises the Mississippi river in New Orleans with a special jazz dinner program at night. I caught it pulling away from the dock starting its dinner cruise.

I do. It was the cheap beer you could buy when we were young and had no money. Here is the old brewery now shops just off Jackson square.
