The Palace of Khudayar Khan

**El-Len** posted a photo:

Located in the city of Kokand, Uzbekistan, this palace is one the few remaining vestiges of the Kokand Khanate. This Khanate was a short-lived state, existing from 1709 – 1883. Like the rest of Central Asia, Kokand came under the control of the Russian Empire in the 19th century as the Russians sought trade routes through Central Asia and Iran in order to compete with the British in India in what later came to be known as the Great Game. A treaty signed in 1869 made the Kokand Khanate a Russian vassal state, but the area fully succumbed to Russian control in 1883 when the khanate was abolished and the area became part of Russian Turkestan.

During the last few years of the existence of the khanate, the ruling Khan, Khudayar, spent his time and money building a lavish palace. Completed in 1874, the palace has 114 rooms, seven courtyards and a rather extensive harem. This photograph depicts the entrance to the palace.
