The rightmost of the five panels in the Scotts Valley Cinema mural, a public art project of Scotts Valley's Regional Artisans Association.

The print next to Alfred Hitchcock's head says, in typical movie poster print style, "In 1940, director Alfred Hitchcock and his family purchased an estate in Scotts Valley, where they lived for several decades. Mr. Hitchcock had a long standing relationship with Santa Cruz County. This mural generously supported and sponsored by Lenz Arts and the Cinelux Theater. Also A Tool Shed, McCown Painting and the Ow Family. Wait, there's more: King's Paint, Scarborough/Ace Hardware and Active Matrix Networks & the Scotts Valley" -- and that's how it ends, apparently unfinished.

Cinematic Mural

The eastern wall of the multiplex movie theater in Scotts Valley, California, is the site of an impressive mural which incorporates five posters for classic movies -- with a twist. Each is presented as though the films had been located in the environs of Scotts Valley, the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The mural is the first work in the "Art in Public Places" project of Scotts Valley's Regional Artisans Association. A recent article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel gives more background on the Association and its public art plans.

The next five photos in this photostream will be individual shots of the panels.

Six years ago today (as I upload), and it seems impossible that it was that long ago. But, I guess, it will never feel as long ago as it actually was.

I am hugging my son Adam here at the conclusion of the memorial service he had orchestrated for his brother, Doug, who had succumbed to melanoma the previous November after a long fight. For a more complete account of the remarkable day, please see this entry in my old blog.

Some of my friends who see this will recognize the hairless fellow with guitar as Dave White, vocalist for the metal band Heathen and a long close friend of Doug. Click here for Dave's intensely moving rendition of Heathen's "In Memory Of," accompanied by Jim Adams, the guitarist with hair in this photo. (Note: even if you don't particularly care for metal, you will like this rendition of "In Memory Of.")

An unusual view of the parking lot I usually use at work. On a typical workday, it is packed with cars, buses, motorcycles, and pedestrians -- I have had to wait for up to half an hour to get a space, and I have a preferential (staff) permit!

This morning (Easter Sunday) I came in to get some work done -- and had my pick of places. (That's my old Jeep in the sole occupied spot.)

Racing Lurcher

At the lurcher races, Irish Game and Country Fair, Birr Castle Demesne, 2010. This fellow is either very far ahead or very far behind -- I don't remember which, and it doesn't much matter, because they all seemed to be running like mad just for the joy of it.

Speaking of joy, this photo is worth scanning around at a very large size to enjoy the expressions on the faces in the crowd. Also, the background is the East support wall for the "Leviathan of Parsonstown" great telescope, which was the largest in the world from the 1840s into the 20th century.
