The Shard stands 1016ft (309.6 metres) tall as the tallest building in Europe and the second-tallest free-standing structure in the UK, after the Emley Moor transmitting station. The tower was designed by Renzo Piano and replaced Southwark Towers, which had been put up in 1975.

To the left is City Hall, the home of the Greater London Authority and office of the elected Mayor of London. Designed by Norman Foster and completed in 2002.

Shell Mex & Cleopatra's Needle

Shell Mex House is situated at 80 Strand. The current building was built in 1930-31 on the site of the Hotel Cecil and stands behind the original facade of the Hotel and between the Adelphi and the Savoy Hotel. Broadly Art Deco in style, it was designed by the architectural firm of Messrs Joseph, with F. Milton Cashmore responsible for most of the work. Standing 58 m (190 ft) tall, with 537,000 sq ft (49,900 m²) of floor space, Shell Mex House has 12 floors (plus basement and sub-basement).
The building was for many years the London headquarters of Shell-Mex and BP Ltd for whom it was originally built. Shell-Mex and BP Ltd was a Joint Venture company created by Shell and British Petroleum in 1932 when they decided to merge their United Kingdom marketing operations.

Cleopatra's Needle is an obelisk which was presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan Muhammad Ali, in commemoration of the victories of Lord Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and Sir Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. On erection of the obelisk in 1878 a time capsule was concealed in the front part of the pedestal.

Eye on Westminster

The London Eye is a 443ft tall ferris wheel which allows visitors to see a uninterrupted 360 degree view of the city.
Originally a temporary structure for the Millennium, the Eye now has a lease to remain for at least another 20 years. Its one of the most visited tourist attractions in the UK with over 3.5million visitors annually.

In the distance is Victoria Tower, the largest tower in the New Palace of Westminster. Architect Sir Charles Barry conceived it as the keep of a legislative "castle", echoing his selection of the portcullis as his identifying mark for Parliament, he intended it to be the most memorable element.
At the top of the cast-iron pyramidal roof is a 73ft flagstaff flying the Union Standard Flag.
Upon its completion in 1858, Victoria Tower was the tallest secular building in the world, reaching 323ft high.

Dominating Dome

The great dome of St. Paul's Cathedral stands 365ft (111m) above the City. The enormous structure was the ambition of its architect Sir Christopher Wren, inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The outer dome has a diameter of 112ft (34m) and it made of Portland Stone.

Waterloo Bridge spans over the River Thames. The second generation crossing, it was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and opened in 1945. The arches are clad in Portland stone from the South West of England; the stone cleans itself whenever it rains.
