There was a campaign in the late nineteenth century for better higher education provision in Wales which led to fundraising for the establishment of a college in Bangor. Much of the funding came from contributions by local quarrymen from their weekly wages. The University College at Bangor was one of the three original colleges of the University of Wales. &lt;br /&gt;
