The Ffestiniog Railway is the oldest independent railway company in the world, having opened in 1836. It was built to carry slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog.

A photographic view of the Butterwalk in Dartmouth as viewed from the Quay. A group of people gather in front of one of the buildings to watch the photograph being taken. The houses in the Butterwalk were built in the seventeenth century as a result of the prosperity that increased fishing trade had brought to the area.

A photographic view of Clevedon from the end of the Pier. Clevedon is situated on the the Bristol Channel Coast. The Pier was constructed using surplus rails from Isambard Kingdom Brunel's (1806 - 1859) South Wales railway.

A photographic view of Clifton suspension bridge spanning the Avon Gorge. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 - 1859), the building of the bridge began in the 1830's and the towers were completed by 1843. Running short of funds, Brunel sadly died before the bridge was finished but his death inspired its completion, in 1864, as a memorial.

A photographic view across the Menai suspension bridge in Bangor, North Wales. Built by one of England's greatest civil engineers, Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834), construction began in 1819 and the bridge opened for traffic in 1826. It crosses the Menai Straits between Bangor and Anglesey.

The University was founded in 1884. There was a campaign in the late nineteenth century for better higher education provision in Wales which led to fundraising for the establishment of a college in Bangor. Much of the funding came from contributions by local quarrymen from their weekly wages. The University College at Bangor was one of the three original colleges of the University of Wales.
