UNION 2-size smooth plane: this plane would be the last type - model that was produced by the Union Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut.

This plane was made around the time that the Union Mfg. Co. Was purchased by Stanley, about 1920. The plane has some unique markings and differences in features that distinguish it from Stanley planes of that era but the cast iron bed was produced exactly the same as to size and shape as the Stanley equivalent.

UNION 2-size smooth plane: this plane would be the last type - model that was produced by the Union Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut.

This plane was made around the time that the Union Mfg. Co. Was purchased by Stanley, about 1920. The plane has some unique markings and differences in features that distinguish it from Stanley planes of that era but the cast iron bed was produced exactly the same as to size and shape as the Stanley equivalent.....EXACT.
GOODALL Co. (No. 2 smooth plane)

(No. 2 smooth plane)" />

Samuel I. Goodall manufactured this plane between 1894 - 1896, when making this plane he copied Bailey’s patents almost exactly, except the bed is slightly shorter than the equivalent planes that Stanley made. This plane most resembles Stanley’s first lateral type-5 plane.

In 1896 Stanley purchased the Goodall plane manufacturing business, which put an end to this short lived competition.

This plane is not made as refined as the Stanley equivalent, upon close examination I see some hand filing - grinding in order for some of the parts to fit properly.

Davis Level & Tool Co. Made planes like this about 1872, they never made a plane in a number-2-size, they only made them in the larger sizes. Davis did not make very many planes, so if you find one in any size you will have something extremely rare. Davis was the maker who made really fancy cast iron levels with beautiful cast iron Filigree designs.

This plane was made by a friend and fellow tool collector, This plane is patterned after a larger size Davis plane that he has in his collection, the maker scaled it down to a 2-size. His workmanship is superb, this is one beautiful plane!
Davis 2-Size Smooth Plane (Repro)

Davis Level & Tool Co. Made planes like this about 1872, they never made a plane in a number-2-size, they only made them in the larger sizes. Davis did not make very many planes, so if you find one in any size you will have something extremely rare. Davis was the maker who made really fancy cast iron levels with beautiful cast iron Filigree designs.

This plane was made by a friend and fellow tool collector. This plane is patterned after a larger size Davis plane that he has in his collection, the maker scaled it down to a 2-size. His workmanship is superb, this is one beautiful plane!
What Is A Number-2-Size Plane

-Snapshot- posted a photo:

Because their were so many makers and brands of planes I had to decide on the rules that I would use to determine if a plane is a number-2-size smooth plane, I based this on the early Stanley Bailey plane.

The following are the rules that I use to decide if a plane is a number-2-size, the one rule that I never break is the width of the cutter, 1-5/8 inch is the absolute max.

1. The cutter must be no more than 1-5/8 inches wide.
2. The cutter must be set at the proper angle to the bed to classify it as a smooth/bench plane,
it also must be ground to the point on the bottom.
3. The plane’s bed should be about 7 inches long.
4. The plane should have a metallic bed.
5. The plane should have some sort of rear handle or tote and some sort of front knob, unlike a block plane where you use only one hand to use it, with a smooth plane you should use two hands.
