Hout Bay, surely South Africa's most charming fishing village, is situated along what Sir Francis Drake, more than four centuries ago, described as the most beautiful Cape in the whole wide world. Yet it wasn't that long ago when Hout Bay was regarded as Cape Town's outback, and apart from visiting tradesmen only a few people regularly used to visit.

On the magnificent coastal drive from Cape Town to Cape Point is Hout Bay and Mariner's Wharf, the first harbourfront emporium in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere. Conceptualised and built by Hout Bay's own Stanley Dorman, it continues to grow under his family's watchful eyes.

Cheetah sculpture by Dylan Lewis at Kirstenbosch botanical gardens in Cape Town.
Between 1993 and 2000, Lewis mostly explored the cat form, focussing primarily on the large feline predators of Africa, namely the leopard, lion and cheetah. His large cat sculptures began as a direct and literal, visceral response to the wild animal within its natural environment. He was fascinated by the raw and totally intact instinct behind these feline physical expressions, seeing them as symbolic and archetypal bodily responses - the most extreme manifestations of intrinsic animal being.

Blue Water Lily

On our third day in Cape Town, we headed to Kirstenbosch botanical gardens. Pictured is a blue water lily. This lovely aquatic plant with sky-blue flowers is South Africa's most commonly grown indigenous water lily.

Table Mountain is famous for its tablecloth - a thin white cloud formation that covers the top during certain weather conditions.

When The Wind Blows

The moisture-laden south-easter blows against Table Mountain from over the False Bay and rises. At a height of approximately 900 meters the winds reach the colder layers of air and thick clouds form. These clouds roll over the mountain and down towards the City Bowl. The characteristic tablecloth forms when the clouds reach the warmer, lower air layers and dissolve once more.
