Arundel Castle through the morning mist.
From the 11th century onward, the castle has served as a hereditary stately home and has been in the family of the Duke of Norfolk for over 400 years. It is still the principal seat of the Norfolk family. It is a Grade I listed building.

Arundel Cathedral

Arundel Cathedral is faced with Bath stone and is in the French Gothic style. The planned spire was never built over the north porch.
The west façade has striking figures of Christ and his apostles and a statue of Mary with her divine child, together with a large rose window adorned with stained glass.
The Cathedral was founded by Henry 15th Duke of Norfolk, whose old established family own extensive estates around Arundel, and the building was completed by July 1873, to designs of Joseph Hansom (inventor of the Hansom cab).

St Nicholas, Arundel

The Church of St Nicholas, Arundel, with its strong square tower, was rebuilt in 1380 from an earlier church on the site.
In 1855 Duke Henry Charles and Duchess Charlotte, the 13th Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, undertook the entire cost to refurbish the original six bells, and at the same time added two new bells increasing the number to eight.

The High Street entrance to Arundel Castle.
There are nearly 1,000 years of history at this castle, situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun and built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel.

Priory and Castle

Looking past St Wilfred's Priory towards Arundel Castle on a misty morning.
The Priory of St Nicholas was established at Arundel by Roger de Montgomery, in 1102. Between 1804 and 1815 the building was rebuilt in Gothic style when it housed a private school. Further restoration work was undertaken in the middle of the nineteenth century, when in 1861 the south-east range was converted as a convent known as St Wilfrid’s Priory, as it remained until the 1950s. After 1976 the south range and part of the east range were converted into a care home.
