Sleeping seal, Kaikoura, South Island, NZ

This big guy was fast asleep in the car park by the sea on the East side of Kaikoura. It was nice to be able to see wild seals from close up & they didn’t seem to mind us being there. We were originally planning on doing some whale watching but the weather had other plans; the sea was too rough to take a boat out. If the weather had been a little nicer I think Kaikoura could have been one of my favourite places, but we had just one night here, it was cold and the clouds hid the mountains all around.

the dear hunter | deer fawn

I shot this cute baby deer but only with my Canon 5d :) I spent around 15 mins tracking it as it played and grazed in the field. It stayed at the perfect focal distance for the 300mm and I this shot was taken just before it sneezed.

Another fun year of photography is almost coming to an end and this shot is probably my favourite for the year, so far, can't believe how fast it has gone.. I defiantly want to shoot more next year - a 365 is out of the question, I just dont have the time to see it through but something similar might be quite cool to try :)

cute penguin couple - explored

These two penguins were petting and playing with each other as I approached, just as I looked through the view finder to frame a shot they both stopped and looked straight at me. I got really lucky with the timing, but I am starting to think photography is all about being in the right place at the right time :) Or at least having lots of patience!

Happy thanksgiving to all my American flickr friends and have a great weekend.

Random fact: (well... not that random I guess it's kind of fitting)

Most Humboldt penguin pairs remain faithful to each other for years, rarely choosing new partners unless one of them dies, and they often return to the same site to breed year after year.

giraffe skin | patterns in nature

I love giraffes, as most people will probably know by now! But heres another reason why they are such amazing creatures. Their skin has such a nice pattern, colour and texture to it - I had to get a shot to add to my animal skin collection.

The side of a zebra showing its amazing skin, possibly my favourite pattern in nature, great fun to shoot also.

Red Panda (firefox) at Chester Zoo

One of my favourite animals at Chester Zoo, the Red Panda or Firefox.

Random fact: Red pandas were once thought to be closely related to the giant panda, but genetics has shown they are more closely allied with the raccoon and weasel families.

Red Panda - I was at Chester Zoo on Sunday and have never been lucky enough to see these guys, but on this cold winters day they where out running around and playing with no one watching but me and cat. I took around 80 shots over 40 mins (including a dinner break). This is one of my many favourites. Love these animals!

squirrel - Canon 70-300mm IS test shot

I recently bought the Canon F4 70-300mm IS, this was my first chance to have a play =].

This image was taken in my girlfriends garden, about 20 meters from the tree in bright winters sun, I have a feeling the squirrel's knew I was watching from the Balcony as they wouldn't come from the trees - usually they are all over the garden and around the pond, maybe next time i'll take some better nuts for them!.

It has been very slightly cropped. I love the reach and image quality at 300mm, for once I havn't touched up in either PS or Lightroom.

I love zebra! I took this at Chester Zoo after he turned his back to me... at first I thought he must not want his photo taking then I realised he was showing off his amazing skin! i love the natural pattern, beautiful =]
