Close up shots of a adult giraffe, taken earlier this year at Chester Zoo, England. I have tried playing with these photos a few times now and decided to stop and post, or they were in ganger of never getting shared and lost somewhere on my hard drive.

african pygmy hedgehog

This baby african pygmy hedgehog is possibly the cutest thing I have ever had chance to photograph. So small and full of character. He was a little poser in the tunnel & while sleepy but once he woke up a bit was running around and a little harder to shoot!

Even cuter when viewed large ;)

This is levi the dog (again), can't decide if F2.8 created a bit too shallow depth of field, the tip of his wet nose is about all in focus. I went for such a low fStop as I was struggling for light and he didn't want to sit still for long.

Although shoots like this make me glad I went for such a fast lens, I find I struggle for light more often with the 5d mk2 compared to the 400d, not sure if its because of the low light during winter; I mainly shot in summer with the 400d. Or if there is some technical reason for it.

stop staring at my paws

This is Levi, a staffordshire bull terrier cross with a colly (we think) who lives at home with my parents. He is supprisingly camera shy so was pretty difficult to get him to sit still. Everytime I raised my camera to take a shot, he would jump up and get all nervous, so I only took a few shots and took him on a long walk after to make up for it (in the rain!).

Ranom fact: Levi is an RSPC dog who very nearly lost his back leg when he was a puppy. He has a bit of limp still but it has never stopped him running around like crazy :)

Big is better :)

today I stared a camel in the face

This Bactrian camel was snacking away on some bark (I think) on a fallen tree at Chester Zoo; he popped his head up while still eating and stared into my lens; pausing for just a second. It allowed me to focus and get an eye to eye shot. This fella is pretty damn hansom; a perfect symmetrical face :)

I got really lucky with timing at my zoo visit. Maybe a reward for sticking out in the cold and rain!

Bigger is better!

Random fact: This type of camel is critically endangered :(

baby lion cub | Chester Zoo (RIP) :(

Lion cub taken just before Christmas at Chester Zoo, England. He was out playing with his mum and dad keeping the small crowd entertained!

An update on this little fella (via becki):

It is with deep regret that Chester Zoo announces the death of Asiatic Lion cub Chakra. Chakra, who was born in August last year, was put to sleep on Friday evening (January 9).

Regrettably, Chakra had been diagnosed with a developmental disorder which had recently become apparent as he grew and became more active. - link - January 9 2009

Really sad and tragic news :(

3 images of city/street lights taken from a large hill near where i live. As I was taking the city shots I zoomed and moved the camera creating sketchy lines of colour, then overlayed them all onto a self portrait, edited in Lightroom and Photoshop

Children roam these empty streets
With lust filled eyes and jagged hearts
Narrow frames and crooked teeth,
The whole more valuable than each part.

And the grasp you have upon this group
Is as fragile as a pile of ash.
They know your lies and weakness
With each open hand you bluntly lash.

Oh, these soft legged girls
And hard faced boys.
They know no God,
They have no voice.

We are the sound.
We don't belong.
So raise up your hands

Girls with fire in their eyes.
Boys with will and aim that's true

A recent self portrait; it was taken about a month after having my lip pierced (once the swelling had gone down!). Mum was really not impressed at first probably because of the blood and the fact I couldn't talk much, think she thought I wouldn't be able to talk properly again lol; bless. Mums rule, this photo was for her. =]

Sleeping seal, Kaikoura, South Island, NZ

This big guy was fast asleep in the car park by the sea on the East side of Kaikoura. It was nice to be able to see wild seals from close up & they didn’t seem to mind us being there. We were originally planning on doing some whale watching but the weather had other plans; the sea was too rough to take a boat out. If the weather had been a little nicer I think Kaikoura could have been one of my favourite places, but we had just one night here, it was cold and the clouds hid the mountains all around.
