Engagement Shoot for my friends from back home.
I was happy to offer engagement shots until I saw their work and how good it is (they are wedding photographers)... I'm humbled.

This was taken in Grand Central Station.

This looks better in a larger size (click above). I'm pretty happy with how I managed to keep the foreground in sharp focus.

It has been pointed out that this would have been better if the horizon wasn't cut off in the bottom middle. I should have seen this at the time (should have chimped it). With digital we have no excuses for missing like this do we?

I don't get a lot of keepers on my iPhone. I like this one, and am keeping it.

I like how the Empire State Building looks superimposed in this shot (but it is not).

Shot with the EF 500mm f/4L IS USM + 1.4x Extender.

I basically used the sunny day rule (f/16 @ 1/ISO) and adjusted maintaining the same exposure value until I could do a hand-held shot.

I also did this shot with the x2 extender, but it was notably softer. I'm not sure if the softness was due to the extender, or that I shot with the x2 @ 400ISO, which will never be as clean as 100ISO.

I tweaked contrast and clarity in LightRoom a bit (ok, too much clarity, but my vision requires that), and obviously cropped it down. Since I am using an EOS-1Ds Mark III, I have a fair bit of resolution and can get away with a reasonable amount of cropping.

I've taken some shots with smaller lenses before, and always been somewhat dissatisfied with the results. I always ended up fighting with the tripod. No tripod this time. I think I learned a couple things and can do better next time still. I've heard about people doing a 180 at famous sites. Basically when everyone is pointing their camera, they turn around and take a picture in the exact opposite direction. Maybe I can go there, and turn around and take a shot back at everyone else who is looking up at the moon... wouldn't that be cool!

Hey, if you got the big guns, you got to use the big guns right! That's why Canon makes 'em.

Strobist Info: Vivitar held inches behind the Guiness on 1/16th strength. Triggered by a poverty wizard. Not sure exactly which model of Vivitar because it belonged to someone else on our Photo Walk. (thanks for the experiment)

Ran through the range of power and were amazed to find out that the "x-ray" of a Guiness shows that it is made of blood and bones just like the rest of us.

This inspires me to see what other things become oddly translucent when an off-camera flash is held right up to them from behind. Is it possible that we can see people's thoughts this way?
