Torrey's old schoolhouse

Built in September of 1898,, the Torrey Schoolhouse was intended as a Latter Day Saints meeting hall and community schoolhouse. It operated as a school and cultural center as the lifeblood of the town through the 1970's when it finally shut its doors. It sat empty until the mid eighties when the Church was deeded to the local Daughters of Utah Pioneers with the provision that it was to be moved from its location on Mormon property.

So here it sits on main street of downtown Torrey, all restored and ready for business again.

Here we are on the Hogback, a road that runs along the top of a narrow canyon, which slopes down with little shoulder on both sides to a 2000-foot drop. Down below the Escalante River is lined with trees and appears to be a giant green snake winding its way through the bottom of the canyon.

This section was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and completed in 1935, providing the first year-round access for automobiles to this isolated pocket in southwestern Utah. Before then, mail and supplies were carried to Boulder by mules and pack horses over Hell's Backbone or the Boulder Mail Trail, both ridiculously hazardous routes.

That's a sedimentary pipe, one of the many in Kodachrome State Park - basically a really, really slow stone geyser. However that wasn't the first thing that went through my head when I saw it. . ..

That's Shakespeare Arch, concealed feature at the edge of a isolated sandstone outcrop. The arch is just visible from the main approach road to the state park but was not discovered until 1976, by a ranger searching for a coyote den in a seemingly unremarkable corner of the region.
