Rainbow over Leisure Centre Car Park

Walking back to my car, after work, and in a downpour, I saw this great rainbow over the leisure centre car park in Barnstaple. So balancing umbrella in one hand and phone in the other I took this picture. Two pictures merged, hence the slight distortion.

Lanyon Quoit

A fun Sunday visiting some standing stones. This is Lanyon Quoit, the best-known Cornish quoit. This dolmen collapsed during a storm in 1815 and was re-erected nine years later, with money raised by subscription among the local inhabitants. The reconstruction was not accurate because one of the uprights broke during the collapse and only three were reused. As a result, the quoit is now not so high as it was in the past. The capstone is 2.7 x 5.25m weighing 13.5 tons; the chamber height is about 2m. Believed to be the burial chamber of a long mound, Lanyon Quoit is unusual in many ways and may have been more of a mausoleum or cenotaph than a grave. Recent theories suggest that these megalithic monuments were never completely covered by mounds but that their granite capstone and front portal stones were left uncovered to form a dramatic background to the ceremonies performed there.

Last weekend we travelled past Stonehenge. Although it was a very, very cold and windy it was a beautifully sunny day so we stopped and tried, once more, to do justice to this iconic monument. Seemed to be more dramatic in B&W.

Flocking seagulls on the Quay in Bideford. A cold windy day and they were sent into a frenzy by someone feeding them bread. That same someone will probably be complaining about them their nicking ice creams next week! :-)

Rock Outcrop

Eye catching rock outcrop on the beach at Padstow, up towards what I believe is Harbour Cove. Any geologists know what this is? The rock looked identical in texture etc and the join was seamless . just opposite ends of the colour spectrum. Anyway, it looked almost alien.
