Foto fra Stave ved Ikornnes. Riksheim til høyre. Fjellet heter Straumshornet og finnes på så mange av mine bilder at jeg har laget et eget set for det.

Photo across the inner part of Sykkylvsfjorden, a small arm of Storfjorden (which is known by those visiting Geiranger by boat).The mountain Straumshornet is found on several of my photos and has got a set by itself (see to the right).

By the way, "Tåke" (pronounced "talk-eh") means fog. "Straumshornet" means the horn (commonly used name for such mountains) by "Straumen" (the stream), which is the name for a very, very short river - one of the shortest in the world. Vellesetertindane (Skjortehornet) is one of the alpine mountains you can see from Velledalen. The range is called Sunnmørsalpane (Alps of the region Sunnmøre).

Sunnmørsalpane, Lyngsalpene in the north and Western Jotunheimen (Hurrungane) are the only alpine mountain ranges in Norway, the others are rates as glacial. Real alpine mountains are characterized by nunataks, peaks that reached above the ice, squeezed between glaciers.

From the top of Straumshornet, it is approx 980 m down to the fjord - most of it almost free fall.

The village on the other side of the fjord is Riksheim, hidden behind the top is Ikornnes with the well know Ekornes furniture factory. Far behind to the left is the town Ålesund.

Sykkylven is a municipality of 8000+ inhabitants south of Ålesund on the Norwegian west coast. The main income is furniture productions, Ekornes is the largest producer in Norway and well known all over the world.

But what you will notice when you come to Sykkylven is not the industry, but the beauty of the nature and the mountains in particular. These mountains are among the most alpine mountains in Norway, and reach heights of 1300 to 1600 m.

The photo shows Aure, the center of Sykkylven, seen from the marina.

The dominating mountain in the background is Trollkyrkja. Left of the center is Råna, the highest mountain on the photo. They are both a part of Sunnmørsalpane, and specifically the area called Rånahalvøya, "The Råna Peninsula", which is known for its many peaks and several small glaciers. Three of the minor glaciers can bee seen here: Ljosåbreen on Trollkyrkja and Blåbreen ("Blue glacier") on the mountainside just below Råna on the picture. In the background to the left is a part of the somewhat larger glacier in the Regndalen valley.

The Princess Stone

Prinsessesteinen i Riksheimdalen, Sykkylven, Norge / Norway

This black stone with the magnificent red band, I rate as the most beautiful stone I have ever stumbled across. The stone is close to and can easily be seen from the trail from Trandal to Sykkylven, almost at the top of the Riksheimdalen valley. The valley, with five of its lakes, is seen in the background.

Note the stone in front to the left. I removed this stone and a few others smaller ones that partly covered the red band, hence the pattern is much more visible now.

Pinsessesteinen, "Princess Stone" - why that name? It is a name I have suggested. originally I thought of naming it "Dronningsteinen", or the "Queen stone". The reason is that the Norwegian Queen, Dronning Sonja, at least once made the trip over this pass, so I have referred to this trail as "The queen trail". However, the name "Dronningsteinen" is connected to Norse literature, the story of the two first people on the earth, Ask and Emla, hence the name was "taken". But the Queen was the Norwegian Crown Princess when passing the stone, hence "Prinsessesteinen" was found appropriate. Futhermore, the red band looks like long red hair that even a fairytale princess could be proud of.

August 20th (2009) this photo was published in the local newspaper "Sykkylvbladet", and they used the name "Prinsessesteinen". Hence I can hope for more interest in this stone, and even that the name settles. The place is not easy to reach, which makes it well protected, and it may encourage some to discover a place where they have not been before.

Trollkyrkja (the Troll's church) is a wonderful to view from distance and to climb.

The small peaks on the ridge to the right are the "Trolls". The outermost can easily be reached without climbing equipment, but courage is needed. Second Water, Riksheimdalen

Riksheimdalen is the largest mountain valley in Sykkylven (Norway), and a wonderful place to hike. Perfect tranquility, perfect silence - at least that day and by that lake.

There are four lakes in the valley, with quite simple names: First water (Førstevatnet), Second Water (Andrevatnet), Third Water (Tredjevatnet) and Fourth Water (Fjerdevatnet). This is the second.

A slightly too rainy and foggy day for a mountain trip, but fortunately the water was quiet and the air clear when I came to the second lake.

It had been raining very much the last week, which made the vegetation even greener than usual and the mountainsides are dark and shiny. This is the north-eastern side of the mountain, which is why snow persist even in mid august. I can only guess the altitude of the lake, 8-900 m perhaps?

A linguistic note: The Norwegian word "Vatn" means both water and a lake, hence "Second Lake" would be a more correct translation. But I like "Second Water" better.

I grew up looking at Skorpshornet from across the fjord at a distance of 4-5 km. I never got fed up by looking at it.

The are lots of dramatic looking alpine montains in Sykkylven, e.g. Straumshornet, Trollkyrkja and Hammarsettindane, which where the ones I normally pointed out as the most special ones.

But I always felt that this was the most beautiful of them all. For me it was the most beautiful mountain in the world. It was so "mountain"!

New year's eve I was out with my camera in the snow and cold, looking for subjects for photos, when I discovered how beautiful this place was in the snow. I made at least a hundred shots, with different compositions and shutter speeds, but this one I liked the best.

Most good photos look even better in large, so I find it unneccesary to pinpoint that. But here I make an exception:

Look at it large!
