On the Norwegian National Holiday, even the paparazzis dress smartly, and do it best by wearing a "bunad", the traditional Norwegian dress.

Nidarosdomen on a cold winter day.

Low sun and warm light in Trondheim, Norway.

The trees are white with frost, yesterday they were completely covered with white crystals after the longest and coldest cold spell in Trondheim for 13 years. In fact I stopped to make a photo of the cathedral together with the completely white trees I had seen the day before.

Today it was minus 3, after the cold weeks this was a rather warm day, and in the sun much of the white ice cover had gone. The disappointment disappeared when I saw the beautiful reflections.

E6, the main road through Norway from Oslo all the way up to Kirkenes. South of Oslo the road continues along the Swedish west coast to Trelleborg. In Germany it continues as route 96.

When I met my wife she lived in Berlin, but we both lived just a few hundred meter from E6.

In Trondheim E6 splits in two, one going through the center of the town, one passing in the outside: Omkjøringsveien, "The road leading you around". Most of the traffic on the road is local, especially close to Christmas.

Early summer, there is still some ice left. OK, let's call it early spring. Or late winter. The snow has gone, and green, new grass is squeezing up between the brown leftovers from last year's vegetation.

At this time of the year the lake is beautiful, Trondheim is beautiful, Norway is beautiful, everything is beautiful.

Spiral and shadow

Spiral staircases always make interesting shadow patterns, and even more so when the background cooperates to make it like this.

I wonder what mathematical functions would be needed to describe this pattern? Any suggestions? You have to start with sinus, but what more?

Trondheim Norway.

Many of the old storehouses by the river Nidelven have been destroyed by fires, or so rebuild that they look quite modern. The new ones had to be made to fit the old ones. Now the few old ones stand out as the odd ones.

The cathedral and the Nidelven river. The two most important photo subjects in Trondheim. The third most important is nice weather. The green area between the church and the river, Marinen, is a place where local people gather on sunny weekends in the summer.

The old cathedral was built where the remains of St. Olav were buried - at least that is what is believed. St. Olav died in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030 when christening Norway, and several miracles were ascribed him shortly thereafter. He therefore become one of the most important saints of his age, and despite the far distance Trondheim became the fourth most important goal for medieval European pilgrimage. Trondheim is also called Drontheim in Germany, it signified its importance that other continental Europe has given it names different from the Norwegian name.

In the 1930 the government wanted the town to take back the old name Nidaros, which means the outlet of the "Nidar" river, or Nidelven as it is called now. People of the town called it "Trondhjem", but in the rest of the district is was called "Trondheim", which ended us as the accepted name. "Heim" and "Hjem" are two different forms for the same word meaning "home", and related to the two different standards of written Norwegian, "Bokmål" and "Nynorsk".

Trondheim was the capitol of Norway during the Viking ages, but after the black death Norway lost sovereignty to Denmark and the to Sweden, and since then the area around Oslo has become far more important. Trondheim has approx 150.000 inhabitants, and around half a million people live in the region Midtnorge (Central Norway) where Trondheim is a natural center.

For some decades ago this part of Trondheim was supposed to make way for a new main road. Now it is well maintained, pittoresque and beautiful area where car driviing is made difficult.

One of the most pictured objects in Trondheim, and probably the most painted.

Also called Lykkens portal, "Portal to happiness".

The bridge crosses the river Nidelven. Total length in 82 m. An 8 m long part of the bridge between the red portals can be be lifted up to let boats taller than 8 m pass. I have never seen that happen, but the portals are quite decorative.

On one of the hills around Trondheim after the first real cold spell in the autumn.

Lomtjønna means "the lom ponds", but I have so far never seen this diving bird here, and there is only one pond.

For both of us...

I am no paparazzo, but I had to grab the chance to take a photo when I saw her like that. Of course I asked her afterwards if it was OK, and if I was allowed use the photos. She looked at the photos, smiled and said "Yes" and "Thank you".
