USA - Yosemite National Park - View on Mount Dana at Dana Meadows

On our way to Yosemite National Park we drove through a beautiful landscape. On one side wide stretches of fresh grass speckled with little ponds not unlike those in the (chronologically) first story on Narnia, on the other side a sweeping low mountain range and in the middle a solitary peak seemingly never coming closer.

How I miss those days of our road trip in the States...

Thanks a lot to G Dan Mitchell for identifying this magnificent place as Dana Meadow, just inside the boundaries of Yosemite National Park.

Back after a very sunny weekend - how I needed that! - with more from this wonderful city that is Cape Town.
Been driving around a bit in parts I hadn't come before and it seems like this city really does have everything :)

Green Point Stadium
On the day it was handed over to FIFA we visited this splendid new stadium up at the harbour.
Construction on the stadium started in March 2007 and the building was officially handed over to the city after a mere 33 months, having cost $600 million.
The stadium will host 8 World Cup games, after which the capacity will be brought back from the current maximum of 68,000 to about 55,000.

The picture
Somewhere towards the end of our second week in the Carpathian Mountains, we went on a full-day hike to the summit of the Buila-Vânturariţa National Park. The weather was hot and the climbing hard, so when we reached the peak of the mountain we just crashed in the soft grass (after locating a sheep-dung-free spot).

These sheep were roaming free on the slopes of the mountain, just within sight of a couple of horsebacked shepherds.

Parcul National Buila-Vânturariţa
The B-V National Park is the smallest of Romania, covering just over 40 square kilometers. Established in 2004, it is still in full development, to which purpose we traveled across Europe in order to help them out a little bit. It is known for its particular geology, made up of karstic limestone riddled with caves and outcrops.

Due to its isolated location and difficult access, the flora and fauna of the park is still very much untouched and extremely varied. Besides natural treasures, the park also holds numerous churches and monasteries, some of which date back for centuries.

Aglais urticae / Small Tortoiseshell @ Roslin, Scotland

Small Tortoiseshell

The Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe. The butterfly is abundant in most areas of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The adult is striking, with its dark body and red and yellow wings, which have a row of blue dots around the rear edge. However, the underwings are dull, which helps to conceal stationary or hibernating individuals.

About the picture

I found this little one in Roslin, next to the world-famous Rosslyn Chapel. We arrived just too late to get in on a tour, so had some time off. The rain had just stopped and we decided to walk around the chapel a bit.

He (or she) was sitting in the middle of a thicket of cotton thistles, quite hard to get on camera, but very nicely illuminated by the bright summer sun.

St. James's Park is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London, in Westminster, central London.

St. James's Park is bounded by Buckingham Palace to the west, The Mall and St. James's Palace to the North, Horse Guards to the east, and Birdcage Walk to the south.
The park has a small lake, St. James's Park Lake, with two islands, Duck Island and West Island. A bridge across the lake affords a view of Buckingham Palace framed by trees and fountains.

Several Gray Squirrels call this park their home, performing tricks for the over 5.5 millions of visitors a year, and feasting on their peanuts.

Bumblebee on a Pink lupin

In my grandparents' garden, I spotted this bumblebee. So busy, it didn't even notice me coming back with my camera and zoomlens and taking this picture. Just kept flying round and round the flowers.

Thanks to cox-in-the-box for identifying the flower as a pink lupin ;-)

Belgium - Beveren - Under a blanket of snow

It must have been a funny sight to behold: me lying face down in the snow, pointing a camera at something covered under a thick blanket of snow.

The "something" are Brussels sprouts, a classic Belgian vegetable resembling tiny little cabbages. Best enjoyed slowly braised with a dollop of grain mustard, they are mostly hated by kids and take a while to be appreciated...a bit like Belgium itself actually ;-)

Just checked, and this is the 250th photo on my stream... Whoo-hoo :p

Sometimes you'll find somebody posing for you without knowing it herself...
Sitting in the exact perfect spot, adding to the surroundings in a way she couldn't have imagined...

To me she was a French-speaking Québequois, a student at one of the universities of Montréal, coming to the park on the hill to enjoy the quiet peace only disturbed by audacious squirrels arching over the lawn, to study the newly acquired knowledge after the first day back to school.

Maybe she was. Maybe she wasn't.
But does it really matter?

The United States Capitol
The Capitol sits atop the Capitol Hill, looking out over the National Mall (to the west) and the Library of Congress (east).

Looking for a slightly more original vue of this excessively photographed building, I walked around to the north side and was suddenly struck by this sight through the trees surrounding it.

Belgium - Leuven - Station roof

Took this picture after coming back from a quick photoshoot at the station in Liege, about 30 minutes by train from Leuven.

During the renovations in the station of Leuven, they added elevators on every platform, connected to a suspended walkway crossing the tracks. High up you get you take these close-up shots from the amazing roof structure.

Converted to monochrome in Photoshop, then added a soft gradient for the colour.

The picture
The start of my longest travel so far: a couple of days in Tel Aviv before continuing to Nablus in the West Bank (Palestine) to teach the kids some English and French during winter. After that I continued for Jordan, Egypt and Ethiopia, but this was the first stop.

Having contracted a mild flu the day before my departure, I spent my first 2 days in Tel Aviv lying in bed at the hostel. Only at night did I come out for a walk and to get some basic groceries.
This picture was taken on the second night, when I met a friend of a friend for dinner. For some reason the lights in that office building came in different colours, which made for a quite interesting shot imho.

Ok. Not really a New Year's fireworks shot...but it still kind of fits :)
With New Year, I had the most amazing fireworks display ever. Not 1, not 2, but more than 50 fireworks at the same time! I'm not kidding. We live on the 16th floor (17th for you Americans), which gives us a fabulous view over the flat world around us. The sky was just continuously filled with exploding rockets!
I was so intrigued by the whole show that I even forgot to take pictures, only have some videos...

This one was taken at the Belgian coast (Nieuwpoort) during the fireworks for our National Day, July 21st last year. Out of the 100+ shots I took that night, this is one of my favourites.

As part of the Ring of Kerry, Torc Waterfall is a popular tourist attraction in Killarney National Park.
It's proximity to the city of Killarney and easy access draw a broad public to its tranquilising clattering and lush green setting.

On a sun-splashed, yet wind-wielding afternoon we came to Mussenden Temple, a tiny little library/locus amoenus dangerously balancing on the edge of the seaside cliffs near the village of Castlerock, Co. Derry (Northern Ireland).

Swelling gales swept gayly
through the golden grass on both sides of the path
Heavy clouds leapt across the blue skies offering
crisp contrasts of chiaroscuro.

It is said that the Bishop of Derry built this little temple to hide his mistress from the world... He could not have chosen a more passionate place!

In 2 days I'll be in London for the rest of the week, then head up north to Scotland for 10 days, with the last leg being a 3 week-roundtrip of Ireland by car.
